The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for The Fate of the Furious (2017), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Mile in Havana

Dominic Toretto and Letty Ortiz are enjoying their honeymoon in Havana, Cuba, soaking in the local car culture. However, the peace is disturbed when Dom's cousin, Fernando, lands in trouble owing money to a local racer and loan shark named Raldo. Sensing the predatory nature of Raldo, Dom intervenes and challenges him to a street race to settle the debt. The terms are high stakes: they pit Fernando's rusted 1949 Chevrolet Fleetline against Raldo's pristine 1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria. Dom wagers his own 1961 Chevrolet Impala show car to sweeten the pot, intending to win Fernando's car back.

Dom modifies the Fleetline with improvised Cuban nitrous oxide to compensate for the vehicle's poor condition. The race is brutal; as they tear through the streets, one of Raldo's associates attempts to sabotage Dom by positioning a motorcycle in his path. The collision damages the Fleetline's engine, causing the turbo to overheat and glow a dangerous red. In a desperate move, Dom rips off the throttle cable to force the car to run at full speed, exacerbating the overheating until the turbo leaks fuel and the engine catches fire. With the windshield shattered by the heat and flames engulfing the hood, Dom spins the car around, driving in reverse to manipulate the aerodynamics and shield himself from the fire. He narrowly wins the race by a fender. Earning Raldo's respect, Dom allows the loan shark to keep his car, stating that a Toretto needs something faster, and gifts his own Impala to his cousin. The next day, Dom's honeymoon is interrupted by an elusive woman named Cipher, who stops him on the street and coerces him into working for her by showing him unseen leverage on her phone.

Betrayal in Berlin

Shortly after the encounter in Havana, Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs receives an off-the-books mission to retrieve a stolen EMP device from a military outpost in Berlin. Warned that he will be disavowed if captured, Hobbs recruits Dom and his crew—Letty, Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, and Ramsey—to execute the job. The team successfully secures the device, but during the getaway, the mission takes a shocking turn. Dom goes rogue, forcing Hobbs' vehicle off the road in a violent crash. While Hobbs is trapped in the wreckage, Dom steals the EMP device and delivers it to Cipher, leaving his team confused and devastated.

Hobbs is arrested by German police and incarcerated in the same high-security supermax prison that houses Deckard Shaw, the man Hobbs previously helped imprison. The tension between the two is palpable, but a prison riot soon breaks out, initiated by a system failure on the cell doors. During the chaos, both Hobbs and Deckard make their way out, only to be extracted by intelligence operative "Mr. Nobody" and his new protégé, "Little Nobody." They bring the rivals to a secret base where Dom's team is waiting. Mr. Nobody reveals that Cipher is a master cyberterrorist and the true mastermind behind their past adversaries, having employed Owen Shaw to steal the Nightshade device and Mose Jakande to target the God's Eye. To catch her and find Dom, Mr. Nobody recruits Deckard into the team, much to the group's dismay.

The God's Eye and the Secret Son

Using the God's Eye software, Ramsey tracks Dom to a specific location. However, the plan backfires as Dom and Cipher anticipate the move; they attack the base immediately, using grenades and high-tech weaponry to incapacitate the team and steal the God's Eye device. During the confrontation, Dom hesitates when facing Letty but ultimately leaves with Cipher. Back on Cipher's stealth plane, the reason for Dom's compliance is revealed. Cipher has kidnapped Dom's ex-lover, Elena Neves, and a baby boy. Elena reveals that the child is Dom's son, born as a result of an unintended pregnancy before Dom learned Letty was alive. Elena tells Dom she calls the boy by his middle name, Marcos, leaving his first name for his father to decide. Cipher uses the mother and child as hostages to ensure Dom's absolute loyalty.

Chaos in New York City

Cipher dispatches Dom to New York City to retrieve a "nuclear football" held by the visiting Russian Minister of Defense. Before the mission begins, Dom manages to evade Cipher's surveillance for a brief window, thanks to help from Raldo in Havana. He uses this time to meet with a mysterious woman—revealed to be Magdalene Shaw, the mother of Deckard and Owen—in a secluded alley to strike a secret deal. Back on the mission, Cipher unleashes chaos upon the city to facilitate Dom's theft. She hacks into thousands of autonomous vehicles, reprogramming them to "auto-drive" simultaneously. Cars rain down from parking garages and swarm the streets, creating a pileup that traps the Minister’s motorcade.

Dom cuts through the destroyed convoy to steal the nuclear football. His former team intercepts him, leading to a high-speed chase across the city. They manage to corner him using grappling hooks to tether his car, but Dom uses raw horsepower to destroy their vehicles. In the ensuing chaos, Dom appears to shoot and kill Deckard Shaw. Letty manages to snatch the case containing the nuclear codes, but she is ambushed by Connor Rhodes, Cipher's ruthless right-hand man. Rhodes prepares to kill Letty, but Dom intervenes, saving her life while forcefully taking the case back. He leaves Letty unharmed but heartbroken.

A Deadly Ultimatum

Upon returning to the plane, Dom is confronted by a furious Cipher, who accuses him of hesitating to take the football from Letty and risking the mission. To punish him and ensure he never steps out of line again, she has Rhodes execute Elena right in front of Dom, while the baby cries in the background. Cipher threatens that if Dom fails to cooperate again, his son will be next. Broken but resolved, Dom is deployed to a separatist base in Russia. His mission is to use the EMP device to disable a nuclear submarine, allowing Cipher to hijack it and launch nuclear missiles to trigger a global war.

Showdown on the Ice

As Dom initiates the EMP and Cipher takes control of the submarine, the team arrives on the frozen bay, outfitted with modified vehicles provided by Mr. Nobody to navigate the ice. They engage the separatists and attempt to prevent the submarine from reaching open waters. Meanwhile, a secret plan orchestrated by Dom comes to fruition. Deckard Shaw, who had faked his death with the help of Tego Leo and Rico Santos, infiltrates Cipher's plane mid-flight alongside his brother, Owen Shaw. They fight through Cipher's guards to rescue baby Marcos.

Once Deckard confirms via comms that the child is safe, Dom instantly turns on his captors. He kills Rhodes, avenging Elena's death, and rejoins his team to stop the submarine. Incensed by the betrayal, Cipher launches an infrared homing missile from the submarine, targeting Dom. In a daring maneuver, Dom breaks away from the group and drives across the ice, luring the heat-seeking missile back toward the surfaced submarine. He jumps his car over the sub at the last second, causing the missile to strike the vessel, obliterating it instantly.

Family Reunited

The explosion from the submarine creates a massive shockwave and a wall of fire. The team quickly forms a vehicular phalanx around Dom's crashing car, shielding him from the blast and debris. On the plane, Deckard confronts Cipher, but she manages to grab a parachute and jump out of the cargo hold before he can capture her. Deckard secures the baby and the mission ends in success.

Later, Mr. Nobody and Little Nobody meet the team in New York City to report that Cipher is still at large, though her plan has been thwarted. Hobbs is offered his badge and job back at the DSS, having been cleared of all charges, but he declines the offer, choosing instead to focus on being a father to his daughter. Deckard arrives carrying Dom's son, setting aside his differences with the group. Dom accepts Deckard into the family circle. The film concludes with a rooftop barbecue, where Dom introduces his son to the crew, revealing that he has named him Brian, in honor of his brother-in-law and best friend, Brian O'Conner.
