The Plot
The Lompoc Breakout and Escape to Rio
The story begins on a desolate stretch of highway as a prison transport bus carries the notorious Dominic Toretto toward Lompoc Prison to serve a twenty-five-year sentence. Suddenly, the roar of high-performance engines disrupts the silence. Brian O'Conner and Mia Toretto execute a precise, high-speed assault on the transport. Using their vehicles to maneuver around the bus, they force it to swerve violently, causing it to clip Brian’s car and flip repeatedly down the road in a shower of sparks and metal. Miraculously, despite the catastrophic crash, Dom is pulled from the wreckage alive. With authorities launching a massive manhunt, the trio flees the United States, crossing borders and evading capture until they reach the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
While awaiting Dom's arrival in Rio, Brian and Mia reconnect with their old friend Vince, who has established a life there. Vince offers them a job to steal three high-end cars from a moving train to secure some quick cash. The heist, however, is far more dangerous than advertised. Brian and Mia discover that agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) are aboard the train, monitoring the vehicles which are seized property. When Dom arrives with the rest of the crew to execute the mid-heist extraction, he notices that Zizi, the leader of the other heist crew, is singularly focused on securing a Ford GT40. Sensing a setup, Dom deviates from the plan, ordering Mia to drive the GT40 off the train and escape alone. Dom and Brian remain behind to fight Zizi and his henchmen. In the ensuing chaos, Zizi executes the DEA agents assigned to the transport. Dom and Brian barely escape capture by driving a Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport off a cliff and plunging into the water below.
The Chip and the Arrival of Hobbs
Captured by mercenaries at the riverbank, Dom and Brian are dragged before Hernan Reyes, a ruthless drug lord who owns the cars and employs Zizi. Reyes demands the location of the GT40, but the pair manage to break free from their restraints and escape back to their safehouse. There, they reunite with Mia and begin examining the Ford GT40 to understand its value. The tension rises when Vince arrives and is caught trying to surreptitiously remove a computer chip from the vehicle’s dashboard. Under pressure, Vince admits he planned to sell the chip back to Reyes on his own. Enraged by this betrayal of family trust, Dom forces Vince to leave. Brian analyzes the chip and discovers it contains a digital ledger of Reyes' entire criminal empire, including the specific locations of safe houses containing US$100 million in cash.
Meanwhile, the murder of the DEA agents on the train brings heavy heat from the U.S. government. They deploy an elite team of Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agents led by the relentless Luke Hobbs. Hobbs arrives in Rio with a single objective: to hunt down Dom and Brian. Needing a local guide who hasn't been bought by the cartels, Hobbs recruits Officer Elena Neves to assist his team. Hobbs tracks the fugitives to their safehouse in the favelas, crashing through the door just as Reyes' men launch their own assault to recover the chip. A chaotic three-way firefight and foot chase ensue across the rooftops of the favela. Dom, Brian, and Mia barely manage to escape the crossfire. Once safe, Dom suggests they split up to increase their chances of survival, but Mia drops a bombshell: she is pregnant with Brian’s child. Determined to keep the family together, Dom changes tactics. He proposes they steal Reyes' $100 million to fund a new life where they won't have to run anymore.
Assembling the Team and the Heist Plan
To pull off a heist of this magnitude, the trio contacts their most skilled associates from around the world. The "family" assembles in an abandoned warehouse: tactical driver Han Seoul-Oh, fast-talker Roman Pearce, tech genius Tej Parker, weapons expert Gisele Yashar, and the demolitions duo Tego Leo and Rico Santos. Their plan is psychological warfare; they attack one of Reyes' cash houses and burn the money in front of his staff rather than stealing it. This brazen act terrifies Reyes, forcing him to consolidate his remaining cash into one impregnable location: an evidence vault inside the Rio police station, which is firmly under his payroll.
The team begins extensive surveillance and preparation. They acquire Reyes’ handprint through Gisele's seduction tactics to bypass biometric scanners. They also realize their high-speed tuners are invisible to the naked eye but too slow for the police station's security cameras. To solve this, Dom, Brian, Han, and Roman break into a police lot and steal four 2010 Dodge Charger police cruisers, allowing them to blend in. During this preparation phase, Vince returns. He redeems himself by saving Mia from a kidnapping attempt by Reyes' men in a market. Seeing his loyalty and desire to help, Dom forgives Vince and welcomes him back into the crew.
The Ambush and a Fatal Loss
Before the heist can begin, Hobbs and his team locate the crew's hideout. In a tense confrontation, Hobbs arrests Dom, Mia, Brian, and Vince. As the DSS agents transport the prisoners to the airport for extradition in a heavily armored Gurkha LAPV, Reyes’ men ambush the convoy on a bridge. A rocket-propelled grenade strikes the lead vehicle, and a heavy firefight erupts. Reyes' mercenaries systematically slaughter Hobbs' entire team. Dom, Brian, and Vince—still handcuffed—realize they are sitting ducks. Dom convinces Elena to free them, and the crew immediately jumps into the fray to save the wounded Hobbs and Elena. They fight off the attackers, but in the chaos, Vince is shot in the abdomen. They manage to escape with Hobbs and Elena, but Vince succumbs to his wounds and dies, entrusting his share of the job to his family.
Consumed by rage over the death of his team, Hobbs agrees to a temporary alliance with Dom. He and Elena will help the crew exact revenge on Reyes and steal his money, though he promises no immunity afterwards. The plan is accelerated. Hobbs uses the armored Gurkha to smash through the front wall of the police station, creating an entry point. Dom and Brian drive two reinforced matte-black Dodge Chargers into the station, hook steel cables to the massive vault, and tear it straight out of the building's foundation.
The Vault Chase on the Bridge
Dom and Brian roar through the streets of Rio, dragging the multi-ton vault behind them. The vault acts as a wrecking ball, smashing through pursuing police cruisers and property as they drift around corners. A massive chase ensues, leading them onto a bridge. Realizing they cannot outrun the swarm of corrupt police and Reyes' heavy hitters with the extra weight, Dom makes a sacrifice play. He tells Brian to detach and save himself. Once Brian is clear, Dom whips his Charger around, using the momentum of the sliding vault to smash directly into the pursuing vehicles, crushing them and clearing the bridge.
Dom’s car is eventually disabled by the impact, leaving him vulnerable. Zizi exits a vehicle, preparing to execute a dazed Dom, but Brian returns just in time and kills Zizi. Reyes, critically injured in the crash, crawls from his wreckage. Hobbs arrives on the scene, towering over the drug lord. Seeking retribution for his fallen agents, Hobbs executes Reyes without hesitation. The immediate threat is over, but the standoff returns. Hobbs refuses to let Dom and Brian go but admits he cannot arrest the men who saved his life. He gives them a twenty-four-hour head start, on the condition that the vault stays with him. Dom and Brian agree and flee.
The Switch and the New Life
When Hobbs finally opens the battered vault on the bridge, he finds it empty. A flashback reveals the crew's true genius: during a brief window where they were out of sight from the police helicopters, they swapped the money-filled vault with an identical decoy hidden inside a garbage truck driven by Leo and Santos. The team meets one last time to split the $100 million earnings. Dom ensures that Vince’s share is sent to his widow and son. The crew then disperses, each heading to different corners of the globe to live out their dreams.
Some time later, on a pristine tropical beach, a visibly pregnant Mia and Brian relax by the ocean. They are joined by Dom and Elena, who are now a couple. The peace is settled, but the competitive spirit remains. Brian challenges Dom to one final, no-stakes race to definitively prove who the better driver is. As they rev their engines, the screen cuts to the credits, showing a montage of the two racing their new high-performance cars along the coast.
Post-Credits: A Ghost from the Past
In a mid-credits scene located in an office in Washington, D.C., Hobbs is hard at work when he is approached by U.S. Customs agent Monica Fuentes. She hands him a classified file concerning the hijack of a military convoy in Berlin. Hobbs is initially dismissive, noting it's not his jurisdiction, until Fuentes tells him to keep looking. Hobbs flips to a recent surveillance photograph included in the file. He stares in shock at the image of the alleged perpetrator: Letty Ortiz, Dom’s former girlfriend who was presumed dead. The revelation sets the stage for the next chapter.
