The Plot
The Legend of the Flying Dutchman
The story opens with a rugged pirate narrator recounting the tale of the Flying Dutchman, a ghostly figure cursed to roam the seven seas for all eternity. Legend dictates that the only way for the Dutchman to break this ancient hex is to find a soul that is purely innocent and swap places with them. Meanwhile, in Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob SquarePants wakes up to a momentous discovery: he has grown to be exactly "36 clams tall." This new height officially classifies him as a "big guy," and he rushes to share the news with his best friend, Patrick Star. With his new stature, SpongeBob is finally eligible to ride the dreaded Shipwreck roller coaster at Booty Beard's amusement park, a feat he has dreamed of for years.
However, upon arriving at the park and staring up at the coaster's terrifying, near-vertical tracks, SpongeBob's courage crumbles. Overcome by fear, he concocts a lie, telling Patrick they cannot ride it because Mr. Krabs is not there to join them. Patrick, determined to help his friend, drags SpongeBob all the way to the Krusty Krab to fetch his boss. Sensing SpongeBob's anxiety, Mr. Krabs covers for him, helping convince Patrick that the ride isn't happening. Privately, Krabs regales SpongeBob with tales of his own youth, claiming he was once a brave swashbuckling pirate captain who sailed the treacherous Underworld alongside the Flying Dutchman himself, until he stole the ghost's prized horn.
The Summoning in the Basement
Inspired by Krabs' stories of bravery, SpongeBob wishes to be as courageous as his boss. Later, while in the Krusty Krab bathroom, SpongeBob and Patrick hear a mysterious, beckoning sound. Following the noise, they stumble into a secret basement where Mr. Krabs keeps a shrine dedicated to his alleged pirate days. Among the relics, SpongeBob finds the Flying Dutchman’s horn. Desperate to prove his "big guy" status and bravery, SpongeBob blows into the horn. The action instantly summons the Flying Dutchman and his spectral ship, accompanied by his first mate, Barb.
The Dutchman, upon seeing the innocent SpongeBob, realizes he has found the pure soul needed to lift his curse. He invites SpongeBob to join his crew, promising to mentor him in the ways of swashbuckling. Patrick insists on tagging along, much to the annoyance of the ghosts. Before they can reconsider, the duo is whisked away through a portal to the Underworld. Mr. Krabs, hearing the horn's blast, rushes to the basement with Squidward Tentacles, but they arrive too late. Determined to rescue his employee, Krabs sets off for the Underworld, with Squidward and Gary the Snail reluctantly joining the mission.
Trials of the Underworld
In the eerie realm of the Underworld, the Flying Dutchman takes SpongeBob and Patrick to Challenge Cove. He explains that to become true pirates—and unknowingly, to prepare SpongeBob for the curse swap—they must endure a series of grueling trials to build "intestinal fortitude." Their first test involves a battle against a crew of skeleton fish pirates. While the ghosts fight ferociously, SpongeBob and Patrick take a different approach; they drape seaweed over themselves to mimic intestines and begin goofing around. The sight is so absurd that the skeleton pirates laugh uncontrollably until they physically fall apart, allowing the heroes to pass the trial.
Meanwhile, the rescue party arrives at Bikini Bottom High School, where they locate Davy Jones's Locker, the gateway to the Underworld. As they navigate the spectral seas, they encounter a group of sirens. Despite Mr. Krabs' warnings, Squidward is entranced when the sirens invite him to play his clarinet. He performs horribly, prompting the sirens to attack him in a rage. Mr. Krabs steps in just in time, saving Squidward from the angry mythical creatures as they continue their pursuit of the Dutchman’s ship.
The Truth Behind the Swashbuckler
As the trials become more elaborate, the Dutchman begins to manipulate SpongeBob, convincing him that a true swashbuckler must abandon childish things—specifically, his love for blowing bubbles with Patrick. This causes a rift between the best friends, leaving Patrick heartbroken. Simultaneously, Barb begins to resent the Dutchman, realizing he does not value her friendship or loyalty. The group eventually reaches the final platform, where the Dutchman pressures SpongeBob to blow the horn once more to finalize the ritual.
Mr. Krabs, Squidward, and Gary arrive just in time to intervene. The Dutchman, cornered, forces Mr. Krabs to confess the humiliating truth about his past. Krabs admits he was never a pirate captain; he was merely a fry cook on the Dutchman's ship who enjoyed blowing bubbles, a hobby for which he was mocked relentlessly. He stole the horn not out of bravery, but spite. SpongeBob is devastated to learn his hero lied to him and apparently does not believe in his bravery. In a moment of defiance to prove his worth, SpongeBob blows the horn.
The Curse Reversed
The blast of the horn completes the ritual, but with a twist. The curse is transferred from the Dutchman to SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs. The Flying Dutchman transforms into a living human, finally free, while SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs are turned into ghost pirates—dubbed "FlyingBob DutchPants" by the sponge. Barb is left heartbroken as her former captain immediately abandons her and the crew to enjoy his mortality in the surface world. Realizing the betrayal, Barb turns to the heroes and reveals a solution: if they can destroy the Dutchman’s horn before sunset, the curse will be reversed. If they fail, they will remain ghosts forever.
SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs ascend to the surface world to chase down the Dutchman, while Barb takes charge of the ship to transport Patrick and Gary back home safely. The Dutchman, now a human, heads straight for the Santa Monica amusement park to enjoy his freedom. SpongeBob and Krabs locate him and attempt to steal the horn, but the Dutchman spots them and flees onto a massive roller coaster, gambling that SpongeBob’s cowardice will prevent him from following.
Courage on the Coaster
Mr. Krabs encourages SpongeBob to embrace his true self, including his bubble-blowing skills, rather than trying to be a pirate. Finding his courage, SpongeBob boards the ascending coaster with Krabs. The ride climbs to terrifying heights, scaring even the now-human Dutchman. As the coaster plummets, the Dutchman loses his grip on the horn. SpongeBob thinks fast, blowing a bubble to catch the artifact in mid-air. He then fashions a bow and arrow out of bubbles and pops the containment bubble, causing the horn to plummet to the ground below.
The horn shatters on impact. Instantly, the curse is reversed: the Dutchman reverts to his ghostly form, while SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs become corporeal again. The Dutchman’s crew, fed up with his selfishness, turns against him. He is demoted to kitchen duty, peeling potatoes, while Barb takes her rightful place as the new captain of the ship, laughing maniacally as she sails away.
Reunion and The Left Behind
Back in Bikini Bottom, life returns to normal. Mr. Krabs expresses his pride in SpongeBob, thanking him for teaching him the true meaning of bravery. A heartwarming celebration ensues at the Krusty Krab, with Patrick, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, and others joining in a massive group hug. The joy is momentarily paused when SpongeBob suddenly realizes a grave error: in their haste to leave the Underworld and chase the Dutchman, they completely forgot about Squidward, who is still trapped in the ghostly realm.
Bonus Story: The Knock-Off Protocol
In a separate adventure, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—Leo, Donnie, Mikey, and Raph—roam the city searching for a heartfelt Christmas gift for their father, Splinter. They stumble upon a commercial for knock-off toys that look like grotesque versions of themselves. Insulted and curious, the brothers trace the toys to a factory in New Jersey. Upon infiltrating the facility, they discover it is run by Chrome Dome, an AI robot villain obsessed with ripping off intellectual property for profit.
The Turtles engage Chrome Dome in combat, but the robot's advanced AI allows him to perfectly mimic their fighting styles, countering every move. Realizing they cannot win with brute force, the brothers decide to trick the AI. They force Chrome Dome to copy self-destructive moves. Leo retracts his limbs into his shell, a move Chrome Dome attempts to replicate. Lacking the biology to do so, the robot malfunctions and explodes, destroying the factory. The Turtles return home, opting for a sentimental gift, only to find Splinter has already bought them presents: the very same ugly knock-off dolls they just fought over. The boys burn the dolls, with Raph declaring his disdain for AI.
