When Bikini Bottom is suddenly scooped out of the ocean by a mysterious company, scientific squirrel Sandy Cheeks and her friend SpongeBob SquarePants embark on a wild road trip to her home state of Texas. There, they must team up with Sandy's eccentric family to save their town from an evil CEO who plans to sell the sea creatures as genetically modified pets.

The Plot
The Abduction of Bikini Bottom
The story begins with a typical morning for Sandy Cheeks, who steps out of her treedome singing a confident song about her identity. She mounts her robotic horse, Sparky, and rides through the town, multitasking by analyzing pieces of sea life to further her marine biology career. Her ride brings her to Conch Street, where SpongeBob SquarePants eagerly rushes out to demonstrate a new jellyfishing technique he has been perfecting. The peaceful morning is abruptly shattered when a colossal mechanical claw descends from the surface.
Panic erupts as the claw scoops up the entire town. Sandy attempts to drag SpongeBob to safety, but in the chaos, her robot horse Sparky is struck, losing his entire back half. SpongeBob watches in horror as Patrick Star, Gary the Snail, and all his neighbors are lifted helplessly out of the ocean. Peering through her binoculars, Sandy identifies a logo on the machinery: B.O.O.T.S. (Bureau Of Official Texas Science), a laboratory based in Galveston, Texas, which happens to be her own employer.
A Perilous Journey to the Surface
While SpongeBob weeps over the loss of his friends, Sandy attempts to contact her colleagues at B.O.O.T.S., Kyle and Phoebe. The transmission is ominous; she learns that the lab has undergone a corporate shift, now affiliated with Gushing Falls Water Park and Sea Pals toys under the new management of Sue Nahmee. The message is cut short, leaving Sandy with no choice but to investigate personally. She and SpongeBob ride a thermal vent to breach the surface, hitching a ride on the wing of a passing airplane.
Their aerial journey takes a chaotic turn when they attempt to disembark over Galveston. Sandy utilizes her flying squirrel abilities to glide them down, but a massive tornado blows them severely off course, landing them in a harsh desert environment far from their target. Meanwhile, inside the B.O.O.T.S. laboratory, the citizens of Bikini Bottom find themselves trapped in a massive glass tank. Mr. Krabs, seeking answers, ventures out of the Krusty Krab and encounters Phoebe. His panic alerts the other residents, while Phoebe and Kyle conduct a headcount, realizing that Sandy and SpongeBob are the only two unaccounted for. The lab's director, Sue Nahmee, enters with a flamboyant rap theme song, pampering her mutant pet fish, Fishy, and demanding the capture of the missing duo.
The Cheeks Family Circus
Stranded in the desert, SpongeBob and Sandy are ambushed by a gang of aggressive rattlesnakes. They attempt to fend off the predators, but Sandy is bitten and poisoned. With her strength fading, she uses a special whistle to summon help. Her call is answered by her estranged family: her mother, father, grandmother, brother Randy, and twins Rowdy and Rosie. The Cheeks family, revealed to be a traveling circus troupe, utilizes their acrobatic skills and circus tricks to defeat the snakes spectacularly. Ma Cheeks quickly administers a cure for Sandy's poisoning.
As the family prepares for a road trip, Sandy is forced to explain her return to Texas, admitting she isn't there for a reunion but to save her friends. While Randy bonds with SpongeBob over fixing the family car and teaching him the special Cheeks whistle, Sandy reminisces about her past as a water-skiing circus performer. Tension rises over breakfast when Ma expresses her disapproval of Sandy's scientific career, stating they are only fine with her leaving the circus if she stays in Texas. The mood is eventually lightened when SpongeBob and Randy join the group, ready to hit the road.
The Sea Pals Protocol
Back at the lab, Sue Nahmee reveals the sinister nature of her experiment to her employees. Driven by a desire to make fish popular pets that can be cuddled, she plans to launch the "Sea Pals" toy line. The process involves feeding the Bikini Bottomites a genetic modification paste to allow them to breathe air, followed by cloning them for mass production. SpongeBob is intended to be the flagship product. To test the viability of this plan, Kyle and Phoebe subject Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward to the modification process. The trio is put through a nightmarish play-test with children, where they are stretched, flung, and pelted with food, confirming the product's durability.
Meanwhile, Plankton and Karen eavesdrop on the scheme. Plankton, whose own cloning attempts have historically failed, is thrilled at the prospect of finally being successfully cloned. However, he is crushed when the scientists reject him for not being "cute" enough, leaving him to walk back to the Chum Bucket in disappointment while Squidward rejoices at his own inclusion.
The Chase to Galveston
The Cheeks family packs into their van to rush Sandy and SpongeBob to the lab, but their journey is interrupted by police sirens. It is revealed that Randy has illegally loaded the van with stolen nuts, sparking a high-speed pursuit. In a desperate maneuver, the family drives directly into a tornado to shake their pursuers, but the police remain on their tail. Realizing they are running out of time, Pa Cheeks loads SpongeBob and Sandy into a circus cannon and fires them toward their destination.
The duo lands in the Gushing Falls water park adjacent to the lab. They are immediately spotted by Sue's ferocious pet pug, Cuda. A chaotic chase ensues through the park's slides and eventually into the sewers, leading them directly into the plumbing of the B.O.O.T.S. laboratory. They emerge through a sink, finally reuniting with Mr. Krabs, Patrick, Squidward, and Gary, though the reunion is short-lived.
The Cyborg Reveal
Kyle captures SpongeBob, preparing him for the cloning procedure. Sandy attempts to confront Sue, but she is overpowered and locked in a cage equipped with a hamster wheel. Sue then delivers a chilling monologue, revealing her lifelong obsession with fish and her tragic backstory involving a piranha attack that destroyed her body. She dramatically sheds her human disguise—her lab coat, rubber neck, and realistic hands fly off—to reveal that she is actually a cyborg.
To make matters worse, Sue reveals that it was Sandy's own marine biology research sent from Bikini Bottom that made the Sea Pals project possible. This revelation devastates Sandy and causes her friends in the tank to lose faith in her, feeling betrayed that she unwittingly facilitated their capture.
Attack of the Clones
SpongeBob is forced into the cloning machine, where he is popped and split into thousands of tiny, squeaky versions of himself. Chaos breaks out in the lab as Mr. Krabs manages to distract Sue, allowing her dog Cuda to accidentally tip over the cloning machine. The army of mini-SpongeBobs scampers freely around the facility. One of the tiny clones approaches the disheartened Sandy, giving her a pep talk about how much she means to them and reaffirming that she is considered family. Witnessing Sue's cruelty, Kyle and Phoebe have a change of heart and decide to help. They align Sandy's cage so that when she runs in her hamster wheel, she generates enough momentum to break free.
The Final Showdown
Free from her cage, Sandy engages Sue in a fierce battle. Using her martial arts skills, Sandy delivers a powerful blow that knocks Sue's robot head clean off her mechanical body. The head flies through the air and lands directly in the tank of her mutant fish, Fishy. Ironically, Sue is delighted by this outcome, as being consumed by the fish allows her to "technically" become one with it, fulfilling her twisted dream.
With the villain defeated, the group faces a new problem: SpongeBob is still in thousands of pieces. Mr. Krabs discovers that squishing the tiny clones together reassembles the real SpongeBob. The friends work together to bring him back, but the celebration is cut short when the stand holding the massive glass tank containing Bikini Bottom collapses. The orb cracks, and water begins to leak out rapidly, threatening the lives of everyone inside.
Saving Bikini Bottom
Sandy realizes they need massive manpower to move the heavy tank back to the ocean. She attempts to whistle for her family, but discovers she lost a tooth during the fight with Sue and can no longer produce the sound. Stepping up, the reassembled SpongeBob uses the technique he learned from Randy to blow a piercing whistle. The Cheeks family hears the call and crashes into the lab to assist.
Working together, the group constructs a makeshift launch device using the components of Sandy's robot horse, Sparky. To power the launch, the entire cast—SpongeBob, Sandy, her family, and the scientists—run together to generate an electrical charge. The resulting blast propels the tank out of the lab and back into the ocean. The glass shatters upon impact with the seabed, restoring the town and its water instantly.
A Circus Celebration
With peace restored, the Cheeks family decides to move their circus underwater. They hold a grand performance inside the Krusty Krab, where Sandy joins them for a musical number, performing high-flying circus acts while her Bikini Bottom friends watch in amazement. Even the former antagonists, Kyle, Phoebe, and the dog Cuda, have been shrunken down and given water suits to watch the show from a jar, while Sue Nahmee, now part of Fishy, swims contentedly in a bowl, bringing the story to a joyous close.
