The Plot
The Pirate and the Book
The story begins on the surface world, where a pirate named Burger Beard navigates the treacherous terrain of Bikini Atoll. Following a map through a gauntlet of booby traps, he locates an ancient pirate skeleton clutching a magical book. Burger Beard snatches the book, which instantly brings the skeleton to life, knocking the pirate back to his ship. Safely aboard, Burger Beard begins reading the book to a flock of seagulls. He explains that this is no ordinary book; whatever is written upon its pages becomes reality. The story he reads tells of SpongeBob SquarePants and the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, specifically focusing on the Krabby Patty, a delicious sandwich that holds the community together.
The Great Krabby Patty War
In the undersea city of Bikini Bottom, Plankton launches a massive aerial assault on the Krusty Krab to steal the secret formula. He drops a jar of mayonnaise on the restaurant, initiating a chaotic war involving condiments and giant foods. SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs, aided by Patrick, fight back against Plankton's war machine. The battle seemingly ends when Plankton surrenders, offering Mr. Krabs a penny as a bribe. Mr. Krabs, blinded by greed, accepts the coin and places it inside his safe. However, the surrender is a ruse; the "Plankton" outside is a robot, and the real Plankton was hiding inside the penny. Once inside the safe, Plankton swaps the real formula with a fake bottle and prepares to leave.
SpongeBob enters Mr. Krabs' office and catches Plankton in the act. The two engage in a tug-of-war over the formula bottle. Suddenly, the bottle vanishes into thin air, leaving both of them confused. Mr. Krabs barges in, sees the formula is gone, and demands answers. Plankton truthfully claims it just disappeared, but Mr. Krabs refuses to believe him. He proceeds to torture Plankton by taping him to a desk and forcing him to listen to SpongeBob’s laughter. The interrogation is interrupted by Squidward, who announces that the customers are revolting due to a lack of Krabby Patties. Mr. Krabs orders SpongeBob to cook more, but the freezer is empty. When Mr. Krabs demands SpongeBob recite the formula from memory, SpongeBob reminds him that the employee handbook strictly forbids memorizing the recipe.
The Apocalypse Begins
Believing Plankton stole the formula, the entire town turns against him. Mr. Krabs and a mob of angry citizens corner Plankton and his computer wife, Karen. Just as the mob prepares to attack, SpongeBob intervenes, blowing a giant bubble to encase himself and Plankton. They float away from the Krusty Krab, escaping the rage of the town. With the secret formula gone, Bikini Bottom instantaneously descends into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Leather-clad citizens run wild, fires burn, and civilization collapses within seconds. Mr. Krabs, heartbroken by what he perceives as SpongeBob's betrayal, falls into despair.
On the surface, Burger Beard finishes reading this chapter to the seagulls, declaring that the story ends with the town in ruin. The seagulls object, demanding a better ending. One seagull manages to rip the final page out of the book, and in the struggle, the page falls into the ocean. The birds threaten to soil Burger Beard’s coat unless he fixes the story.
An Unlikely Alliance
Back in the chaotic ocean, Sandy Cheeks has gone insane, believing the "Sandwich Gods" are angry. She attempts to decipher the torn page that landed on her treedome. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Plankton—now hiding in a bubble—decide to team up to retrieve the formula, though Plankton struggles to even say the word "teamwork." They attempt to recruit Patrick, but the starfish has also succumbed to the madness, betraying them to the angry mob led by Mr. Krabs. SpongeBob and Plankton escape to a hill overlooking the burning city.
That night, Plankton attempts to invade SpongeBob's brain to extract the formula but finds only a world of sunshine and sweets. Realizing SpongeBob truly doesn't know the recipe, the two agree to a new plan: they will build a time machine to travel back to the moment before the formula disappeared.
The Heist at the Chum Bucket
To power their time machine, they need a computer, and Plankton decides they must rescue Karen from the Chum Bucket. They arrive to find the restaurant turned into a fortress guarded by fish beating on a tire. SpongeBob rolls a second tire to distract the guards, allowing them to slip inside. Inside, they find Patrick sleeping, wearing the key to Karen's chains around his neck. Plankton tries to retrieve the key but accidentally falls into Patrick's belly button. SpongeBob reaches in to save him, waking Patrick. To prevent Patrick from alerting the guards, SpongeBob rocks him back to sleep while Plankton narrates a bedtime story. With the key secured, they free Karen, although SpongeBob is forced to carry her head as they flee the premises.
Time Travel and the Dolphin
Retreating to an abandoned Mexican-German restaurant called Taco Haüs, the duo constructs a time machine using a photo booth, a cuckoo clock, stale chips, and Karen's processing power. They activate the machine but accidentally travel four days into the future. They find a desolate Bikini Bottom where Patrick has aged rapidly. Attempting to correct their course, they land in a surreal dimension in outer space where they meet Bubbles, a magical dolphin who serves as the overseer of the universe. Bubbles asks them to watch the planets while he takes a bathroom break. In his absence, SpongeBob and Plankton accidentally allow Jupiter and Saturn to collide. When Bubbles returns, he is furious and fires lasers at them, but they manage to escape back into the time vortex.
The False Victory
SpongeBob and Plankton successfully return to the moment of the theft. They meet their past selves and manage to snatch the formula bottle right before it vanishes. Plankton finally embraces the concept of teamwork as they jump back to the present. They arrive at the Krusty Krab just as Sandy is about to lead the town in sacrificing Mr. Krabs to the Sandwich Gods. SpongeBob interrupts the ceremony, presenting the formula to Mr. Krabs. However, when Krabs opens the bottle, he finds a note from Plankton that reads, "Eugene, Eat my Sub-aquatic Air Bubbles!!! Love, Plankton," alongside a crude drawing. It is the fake bottle Plankton originally swapped. The town's rage reignites, and they decide to sacrifice SpongeBob instead.
To the Surface
As the mob carries SpongeBob to the sacrifice altar, he catches the scent of Krabby Patties. Mr. Krabs smells it too. Realizing the burgers are being cooked somewhere else, the mob drops their weapons and follows SpongeBob. The scent leads them on a perilous journey upward, eventually revealing that the smell is coming from above the water. SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, and a stowaway Plankton (hiding in SpongeBob’s sock) are unable to proceed until Bubbles the Dolphin appears. Bubbles thanks SpongeBob for getting him fired, as he hated his job, and rewards them by using his blowhole to shoot the group out of the ocean and onto the beach.
The Battle on the Beach
On land, the group confronts Burger Beard, who has converted his pirate ship into a food truck and is selling Krabby Patties to beachgoers. He reveals that he used the magical book to write the formula into his possession. Using the book's power, Burger Beard writes a new entry that banishes the heroes to Pelican Island to die. On the island, the group loses hope until SpongeBob remembers the torn page Sandy had found. Using ink from a frightened Squidward, SpongeBob rewrites their story, transforming the group into superheroes with special powers.
Superheroes vs. The Pirate
The team returns to the beach for a final showdown. SpongeBob becomes "The Invincibubble," Patrick is "Mr. Superawesomeness," Squidward is "Sour Note," Mr. Krabs is "Sir Pinch-a-Lot," and Sandy is "The Rodent." They attack Burger Beard, displaying their new abilities. Squidward uses his clarinet to create stunning sonic waves, while Patrick controls ice cream. Despite their efforts, Burger Beard proves resilient. SpongeBob creates a bubble to catch the magical book, but Burger Beard destroys it. Just as the pirate prepares to finish them off, Plankton reveals his own transformation: a Hulk-like giant named "Plank-Ton."
Plank-Ton overpowers Burger Beard, lifting the pirate ship and retrieving the formula. In a final act of teamwork, Plankton passes the formula to Mr. Krabs and uses his strength to kick Burger Beard all the way back to Bikini Atoll. With the villain defeated, SpongeBob uses the final page to return everyone to Bikini Bottom.
Restoration and Credits
Back underwater, everything returns to normal. The Krusty Krab is back in business, and the apocalypse is reversed. However, the status quo is fully restored when Plankton immediately attempts to steal the formula again, fleeing with Mr. Krabs in hot pursuit. SpongeBob smiles, happy that things are back to the way they are supposed to be.
During the credits, the cast participates in a choreographed dance number to the song "Squeeze Me." In one moment, Mr. Krabs steals Patrick's wallet while marching in line, only to throw it away when he finds it empty. Patrick continues dancing, oblivious to the fact that his pants have fallen down. In a post-credits scene, the dance party continues until the very end, where Plankton is seen running for his life, still being chased by Gary the Snail.
