The Plot
The Ambush at Knowhere
While the Guardians of the Galaxy work diligently to restore and establish their headquarters on the celestial outpost of Knowhere, the atmosphere is heavy with personal turmoil. Peter Quill, deeply mourning the loss of the Gamora he once loved, has drunk himself into a stupor, forcing his teammates to put him to sleep. The relative peace is shattered when Adam Warlock, a golden-skinned sovereign warrior, launches a sudden and brutal attack on the Guardians. The team undergoes severe injuries as they scramble to fight back against the overwhelming power of Warlock. Although they eventually manage to repel him, causing Adam to retreat, the cost of the skirmish is high. The Guardians find Rocket in critical condition, battered and near death. As he slips into unconsciousness, Rocket’s mind begins to drift, and he experiences moments of his traumatic past flashing before his eyes, reuniting in his memories with Lylla, Teefs, and Floor—his fellow test subjects from Batch 89—during the time they were first experimented on.
Infiltrating the Orgoscope
Desperate to save their friend, the team attempts to treat Rocket’s wounds, only to discover a kill switch embedded within him by his creators that prevents any medical intervention. Realizing they cannot interact with his physiology without killing him, they determine that the only way to override the switch is to infiltrate the headquarters of OrgoCorp, the company responsible for Rocket's creation. To achieve this, they enlist the help of the Ravagers. This alliance brings the Guardians face-to-face with the Ravagers' newest member, the alternate version of Gamora. Together, they travel to the Orgoscope, OrgoCorp’s organic space station.
Meanwhile, Adam Warlock returns to the High Evolutionary, the creator of Rocket and the Sovereign race, alongside his mother figure, Ayesha. The mission to retrieve Rocket was a failure, and the High Evolutionary, impatient and ruthless, threatens Ayesha, demanding she bring Rocket back to him immediately or face the extinction of the entire Sovereign race.
The Heist and the High Evolutionary's Rage
Inside Rocket's comatose mind, memories resurface of his time in captivity, specifically a moment where he used his genius to better the High Evolutionary's methods for perfecting life forms—a feat that sparked both interest and jealousy in his creator. In the present, the heist begins. Peter, Gamora, and Nebula infiltrate the facility to secure the pass key, while Mantis and Drax remain with Groot to prepare their escape route to their ship, the Bowie. The infiltration team seems to obtain the file they were looking for, but their cover is blown, triggering an alarm. Orgosentries swarm toward them, forcing the team to fight their way out. After thwarting the guards, they manage to escape the Orgoscope, barely making it out alive.
The Search for Theel
Back on the ship, the Guardians examine the file they stole, only to find it contains data on Rocket's experimentation but lacks the crucial pass key needed to disable the kill switch. However, they discover that the key exists within the memory banks of one of the High Evolutionary’s recorders, a minion named Theel. They track Theel to Counter-Earth, a planet designed by the High Evolutionary as a supposed utopia. During the journey, Rocket has another flashback to his youth, remembering the moment he and his friends—Lylla the otter, Teefs the walrus, and Floor the rabbit—chose their own names and made a heartfelt promise to one day travel together in a spaceship across the forever and beautiful sky.
Simultaneously, Ayesha and Adam Warlock continue their hunt. Ayesha confronts a Ravager to demand Gamora’s whereabouts, but Adam, acting on impulse, fries the Ravager. Having extracted the necessary information, they set course to follow Gamora to Counter-Earth.
Arrival on Counter-Earth
Upon the Guardians' arrival on Counter-Earth, Rocket’s memories turn darker. He recalls the High Evolutionary’s meltdown after Rocket’s modifications to the evolution process were proven superior to his creator's own designs. The High Evolutionary cruelly revealed that Rocket was never meant to live in the new utopia; he was merely a tool. When Rocket tried to break his friends out to save them from incineration, the escape went tragically wrong. Lylla, Teefs, and Floor were shot and killed during the chaos, leaving Rocket to escape alone, heartbroken and traumatized.
In the present, with Ayesha’s ship incoming, the Guardians ask a local resident for help finding the recorder. They are directed toward a massive ship looming ahead. Quill and Groot head inside to confront the High Evolutionary and Theel. Meanwhile, the High Evolutionary dispatches a cybernetic lackey, War Pig, to capture the unconscious Rocket. Gamora fiercely fights the beast to protect him. Suddenly, the High Evolutionary initiates the destruction of his failed experiment; his ship begins to lift off as he triggers the planet's annihilation. As Counter-Earth begins to explode, Quill manages to grab Theel and leaps off the rising structure, securing the memory bank just in time. Nebula, Drax, and Mantis, attempting to save their friends, end up boarding the High Evolutionary's ship before it departs.
Visions and Counter-Attacks
Teetering on the edge of death, Rocket experiences a vision of the afterlife where he is reunited with Lylla, Teefs, and Floor. They invite him to join them, but Lylla gently tells him that his time has not yet come, and he must return to his friends for now. Rocket wakes up, the pass key successfully used to save his life. Meanwhile, on the High Evolutionary's ship, Nebula, Drax, and Mantis locate a horde of imprisoned children—the Star Children—but are soon captured and placed in a chamber with three terrifying Abilisks. The High Evolutionary demands Rocket be brought to him.
The Guardians launch a counter-assault using Knowhere itself, flying the massive celestial head to confront the enemy ship. The High Evolutionary unleashes his Hell Spawn troops upon Knowhere and fires his cannons into the laboratory. Inside the captivity chamber, Mantis manages to use her powers to control the Abilisks, turning them from predators into allies, allowing the trio to escape. Elsewhere, Adam Warlock, who had been held captive on Quill and Gamora's ship, breaks free and confronts them. However, when Gamora threatens his pet, Blurp, Adam relents. They escape the ship with Blurp just as it self-destructs, landing at the entrance of the High Evolutionary's laboratory.
The Final Battle
Reunited, the Guardians enter the lab and engage in a massive battle, fending off the High Evolutionary's troops in a coordinated effort. They prioritize freeing every captive on board, leading the Star Children and other experiments toward safety on Knowhere. Amidst the chaos, Rocket revisits his former cage. He discovers a multitude of baby raccoons and other animals stored there. Realizing his true nature, he accepts that he is indeed a raccoon as he works to rescue them.
Rocket is soon apprehended by the High Evolutionary, who is unhinged and desperate. Rocket fights his creator, soon joined by his team members who deliver a punishing beatdown to the villain. With the High Evolutionary defeated and lying at his mercy, Rocket has the opportunity to end his life. However, he decides to spare him, declaring that he is a Guardian of the Galaxy, refusing to kill out of vengeance. The High Evolutionary is subsequently taken to be imprisoned on Knowhere. The team rushes to get the caged animals aboard Knowhere as the enemy ship crumbles.
The Rescue of Peter Quill
As the evacuation concludes, Peter Quill realizes he has lost his Zune music player. In a reckless move, he rushes back into the disintegrating ship to retrieve it. He secures the device but fails to make it back to Knowhere in time before the ships separate. Peter is left drifting in the vacuum of space, his body beginning to freeze and swell. Just as it seems he will perish, Adam Warlock flies out and saves him, bringing him safely to Knowhere.
New Beginnings
In the aftermath, the team decides to disband, each member seeking their own path. Peter Quill decides he wants to spend time on Earth and reunite with his family. Mantis wishes to seek independence and discover who she is on her own. Drax stays behind to help raise the rescued Star Children, stepping into a fatherly role. Nebula remains to lead the community on Knowhere. Gamora returns to the Ravagers, having found her place with them. Rocket is appointed the new leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The narrative shifts to show the new team in action. Rocket, now leading a lineup that includes a redeemed Adam Warlock, his pet Blurp, the powerful Star Child Phyla, alongside Groot and Kraglin, embarks on a new mission to protect the galaxy on Krylor.
Epilogue
On Earth, Peter Quill finally reunites with his grandfather, Jason Quill, whom he has not seen since the night of his kidnapping decades ago. They share a quiet, domestic moment as Peter enjoys breakfast while his grandfather reads a newspaper. The headline on the paper references the kidnapping of Kevin Bacon, bringing Peter's journey full circle.
