The Plot
The Abduction from Missouri
In Missouri, 1988, a young boy named Peter Quill stands by the bedside of his mother, Meredith, as she lies dying in a hospital. Delirious and close to death, Meredith laments on the father Peter has never met, describing him as an "angel" made of pure light. When Meredith finally passes away, a distraught Peter, unable to cope with the sudden loss, flees the hospital in tears. After distancing himself from the building, he runs into a foggy field where a massive spaceship suddenly descends. The alien occupants beam Peter aboard and immediately depart into deep space, leaving Earth behind.
The Outlaw and the Accuser
Twenty-six years later, Quill is now an adult operating as a member of the Ravagers, a clan of space pirates led by Yondu Udonta. The Ravagers have been hired by a mysterious client known as the Broker to recover an Orb from the desolate planet Morag. Quill, who has grown bitter towards the Ravagers for abducting him and ruining his childhood, travels to Morag alone to steal the Orb for himself. However, he is intercepted by Korath the Pursuer, a soldier serving under Ronan the Accuser. Quill manages to escape with the artifact, but his actions draw the attention of dangerous forces.
For the past several years, Ronan, despite a delicate peace treaty between his people and the Xandarians, has been systematically invading Xandarian-controlled and allied worlds. Driven by a mad quest for Kree purity, he has killed hundreds of thousands. While the Xandarians have pleaded their case to the Kree hierarchy, the Kree government refuses to get involved in the conflict. Unbeknownst to most, Ronan is searching for the Orb as part of a deal with the Titan Thanos; in exchange for the artifact, Thanos has promised the total annihilation of Xandar. To aid in this hunt, Thanos has lent Ronan his adopted daughters, Gamora and Nebula.
The Skirmish on Xandar
Yondu discovers that Quill has stolen the Ravagers' prize and issues a hefty bounty for his capture. Meanwhile, the villains track the Ravagers' past dealings and learn of Yondu's connection to the Broker, sending Gamora to Xandar to intercept Quill. On Xandar, Quill attempts to sell the Orb to the Broker directly. However, upon hearing that Korath—and by extension Ronan—is seeking the object, the terrified Broker refuses to become involved and turns Quill away.
Moments later, Quill is ambushed by Gamora, who snatches the Orb and flees into the streets. A chaotic fight ensues, drawing in two bounty hunters: a genetically modified raccoon named Rocket and a tree-like humanoid named Groot, who are seeking to collect Yondu's bounty on Quill. The public brawl attracts the Nova Corps, Xandar's prime military force, who arrest the entire group and imprison them in the Kyln, a high-security space prison.
Prisoners of the Kyln
Inside the Kyln, the other prisoners quickly recognize Gamora as an agent of Thanos and Ronan, threatening her life. Drax the Destroyer, a hulking inmate, attempts to kill Gamora to avenge the murder of his wife and daughter by Ronan. Quill intervenes, convincing Drax that staying his hand is the only way to eventually get to Ronan himself. Gamora then reveals that she intends to betray Ronan. She has grown weary of his insane methodology and the risk he poses to galactic stability, planning to sell the Orb to a third-party buyer.
Realizing that Gamora's buyer is willing to pay an exorbitant fee for the artifact, Rocket, Quill, Groot, and Gamora form a tentative alliance to break out. With Drax joining them to find Ronan, the group executes an elaborate escape plan. They distract the guards by disabling the station's artificial gravity and flee in Quill’s ship, the Milano.
The Wrath of Thanos and the Secret of the Orb
Upon learning of Gamora's betrayal, a furious Ronan travels to meet Thanos in person. He angrily berates the warlord for not taking Gamora's treachery seriously. When "The Other," Thanos's vizier, scolds Ronan for disrespecting the Titan, Ronan abruptly breaks The Other's neck, killing him. Undaunted, Thanos waves Ronan away, entrusting both him and Nebula with fixing the problem. As Ronan departs, Thanos offers a grim warning: if Ronan returns empty-handed again, he will "bathe the stairways" in his blood.
Quill and his allies travel to the mining colony of Knowhere, a lawless outpost built inside the severed head of an ancient celestial. While waiting for Gamora's contact, the group spends time in the Boot of Jemiah. Tensions rise as Drax and Rocket get heavily intoxicated; they brawl after Drax insults Rocket's appearance, leading a morose Rocket to lament the pain of his creation. Furious, Drax leaves and sends a transmission to Ronan, challenging him to a fight.
The rest of the group is summoned by the servant Carina to meet Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector. At his museum, Tivan opens the Orb to reveal an Infinity Stone, an item of immeasurable power. He explains that these stones are remnants of six singularities that predate the universe. Their power is so great that it destroys all but the most powerful beings who wield them. As Tivan prepares the payment, Carina, seeing a chance to end her servitude, grabs the stone. The contact triggers a massive energy pulse that vaporizes Carina and destroys much of Tivan's collection. Quill, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot barely escape with their lives.
The Chase and the Sacrifice
Gamora, now understanding the cataclysmic danger the Orb holds, attempts to convince the group to hand it over to the Nova Corps for protection. However, Ronan and his forces suddenly arrive, summoned by the drunken Drax. While Drax engages Ronan in single combat, the others attempt to escape using industrial Mining Pods. They are pursued by Ronan's Sakaaran minions, led by Nebula. Ronan easily defeats Drax, leaving him for dead, while Nebula destroys Gamora's pod, leaving her sister floating unprotected in the vacuum of space.
Nebula seizes the Orb, and Ronan's forces depart. Despite Rocket's insistence that they flee to save themselves, Quill refuses to leave Gamora behind. He exits his pod and summons Yondu, giving his own helmet to Gamora to help her survive. Yondu arrives and collects the pair before they succumb to the exposure. On the Ravager ship, Quill negotiates a truce, convincing Yondu that they can recover the Orb from Ronan and sell it, rather than killing him.
The Battle for Xandar
Meanwhile, Groot convinces Rocket and Drax to rescue their friends. The trio launches a suicidal attack on Yondu's ship, but Quill manages to de-escalate the situation. Reunited, the group agrees that facing Ronan means certain death, but they must stop him from using the Infinity Stone to lay waste to the galaxy. On his warship, the Dark Aster, Ronan contacts Thanos. Instead of delivering the Orb, Ronan embeds the Power Stone into his warhammer, absorbing its energy for himself. He declares that after he destroys Xandar, he will come for Thanos. Nebula, hateful of her adopted father for the years of torture, aligns herself with Ronan.
Quill alerts the Nova Corps to the impending attack. Allying with the Nova fleet and the Ravagers, the Guardians confront the Dark Aster above Xandar. While Rocket leads the aerial defense, the rest of Quill's team breaches the enemy ship. Gamora battles Nebula, eventually defeating her; she implores her sister to break free from their past, but Nebula refuses and flees in a hijacked Ravager ship. Elsewhere, Quill, Drax, and Groot kill Korath and waves of Sakaaran soldiers. The battle intensifies as Necrocrafts rain from the sky, killing many, including the Ravager Horuz, while Rocket desperately tries to shoot them down.
We Are Groot
Ronan uses the power of the stone to decimate the Nova Corps fleet, killing Garthan Saal. He easily overpowers Quill's team on the bridge. Before he can execute them, Rocket crashes his ship directly into the Dark Aster, colliding with Ronan. The extensive damage causes the massive warship to plummet toward the city. As the ship falls, Groot extends his branches to form a protective cocoon around his friends. Rocket begs him to stop, warning that he will die, but Groot softly replies, "We are Groot." The ship crashes, and Groot is shattered, fatally sacrificing himself to shield the group.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Quill's team survives the impact, but Ronan emerges from the wreckage unscathed. As he prepares to touch his hammer to the ground and destroy Xandar, Quill suddenly begins to dance, confusing the Accuser. This distraction allows Drax to fire the Hadron Enforcer, shattering Ronan's hammer. The Infinity Stone flies loose, and Quill grabs it. The raw power begins to disintegrate him, but he grabs Gamora’s hand, who grabs Drax, who grabs Rocket. Together, they share the burden of the stone’s energy. With their combined strength, they direct the power toward Ronan, utterly destroying him.
Gamora seals the stone in a new container. Quill hands the container to Yondu as per their deal, though he warns him not to open it. As the Ravagers leave, they remark that it was good they didn't deliver Quill to his father as hired years ago. Once they are gone, Quill reveals to Gamora that he switched the containers; Yondu later opens his prize only to find one of Quill’s troll dolls. The group, now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, are pardoned by Nova-Prime Irani Rael. She reveals to Quill that his DNA is only half-human; his father belongs to an ancient, unknown alien race. The Guardians leave Xandar in the repaired Milano, accompanied by a potting pot containing a regrowing twig from Groot. Meanwhile, in the ruins of his museum, The Collector sits with a drink, licked by Cosmo the Spacedog, as Howard the Duck offers a mocking comment.
