The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Evacuation of D'Qar and the Dreadnought

Following the destruction of Starkiller Base, the Resistance scrambles to evacuate their main base on D'Qar. Before the escape is complete, a massive First Order fleet led by General Armitage Hux arrives aboard the Finalizer. Hux orders Captain Moden Canady, commanding the Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought Fulminatrix, to obliterate the Resistance base. As the Dreadnought prepares to fire, Commander Poe Dameron flies out alone in his X-wing, Black One. Defying General Leia Organa’s caution, Poe opens a channel to Hux, mocking him to buy time while his astromech, BB-8, charges the weapon systems.

Poe accelerates, destroying the Dreadnought’s surface cannons, paving the way for the Resistance bombers. Captain Canady, frustrated by the lack of fighter support, orders his TIE fighters to scramble. Although the Dreadnought succeeds in destroying the D'Qar base, the evacuation transports led by Lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix manage to escape. Ignoring Leia’s direct order to retreat, Poe leads a squadron of MG-100 StarFortress bombers to destroy the Fulminatrix. The assault is costly; TIE fighters decimate the slow-moving bombers. Blue Leader Tallissan Lintra and most of the squad are killed, leaving only one bomber, the Cobalt Hammer.

Inside the damaged bomber, bombardier Nix Jerd is knocked unconscious, and pilot Finch Dallow is killed. Paige Tico, the gunner and sister of Rose Tico, is the last one left. With the Dreadnought’s auto-cannons recharged and targeting the Resistance fleet, a dying Paige manages to manually release the payload. The bombs strike the core, destroying the Fulminatrix in a massive chain reaction that also consumes her bomber. The Resistance fleet jumps to hyperspace, but Leia is furious with Poe for the pyrrhic victory that cost them their entire bomber fleet. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Snoke humiliates Hux via hologram for his failure, physically dragging him across the floor with the Force, though Hux promises they have the Resistance "tied on a string."

The Last Jedi on Ahch-To

On the oceanic planet Ahch-To, Rey presents Luke Skywalker with his father’s lightsaber. To her bewilderment, the legendary Jedi Master tosses the weapon over his shoulder and walks away without a word. Rey follows him to his hut in the Jedi village, pleading for help, but Luke shuts the door on her. Undeterred, Rey retrieves the lightsaber from curious Porgs and spots Luke’s X-wing submerged in the bay. Later, Chewbacca breaks down Luke's door. Seeing his old friend, Luke asks about Han Solo, only to realize the tragic truth from Chewbacca’s mournful silence.

Aboard the mega-destroyer Supremacy, Kylo Ren enters Snoke’s throne room. Snoke praises Hux’s tracking technology but brutally critiques Ren, mocking his conflict and calling him a "child in a mask" who has too much of his father's heart. He claims killing Han Solo split Ren’s spirit rather than strengthening it. Enraged by the humiliation, Ren smashes his helmet to pieces in an elevator before heading to his TIE silencer to lead the attack.

Back on Ahch-To, Luke continues to refuse Rey’s call to arms, declaring he came to the island to die and that the Jedi must end. Rey follows him through his daily routine, including milking a Thala-siren and spearfishing. Drawn by a mysterious call, Rey discovers an ancient tree library containing the sacred Jedi texts. Luke confronts her, asking who she is. When Rey explains she was sent by the Resistance and Leia to learn the Force, Luke steadfastly refuses to train her, insisting the Jedi legacy is one of failure.

The Pursuit and the Bridge Attack

The Resistance fleet exits hyperspace, believing they are safe, only to be tracked immediately by the First Order. Leia realizes the enemy has developed hyperspace tracking technology. With low fuel, they cannot jump again. Kylo Ren leads a squadron of TIE fighters in a strafing run, destroying the Resistance hangar and blowing up Poe’s X-wing. As Ren approaches the bridge of the Raddus, he senses his mother, Leia, and hesitates, unable to pull the trigger. However, his wingmen fire torpedoes into the bridge.

The explosion sucks the Resistance High Command into the vacuum of space, killing Admiral Ackbar and many others. Leia survives by instinctively using the Force to pull herself back to the airlock, but she falls into a coma. With leadership decimated, Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo takes command. Poe Dameron immediately clashes with her, dismissing her as a passive bureaucrat when she refuses to share her plan. Meanwhile, Finn, attempting to flee in an escape pod to keep Rey away from the doomed fleet, is stunned by a grieving mechanic named Rose Tico. Upon waking, Finn and Rose realize they can disable the First Order’s tracker. They devise a plan to infiltrate the Supremacy, aided by Poe, who contacts Maz Kanata. Maz directs them to find a Master Codebreaker on Canto Bight.

The Lessons and the Connection

On Ahch-To, Rey and Kylo Ren begin communicating through a mysterious Force bond. Initially hostile, Rey accuses him of being a monster for killing Han, while Ren mocks her search for parental figures in Han and Luke. Meanwhile, R2-D2 convinces Luke to reconsider by playing Leia’s original holographic plea to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke agrees to give Rey three lessons.

For the first lesson, Luke takes Rey to a meditation rock, teaching her that the Force is not a power the Jedi own, but the energy between all things—life, death, warmth, cold, violence, and peace. As Rey reaches out, she is drawn to a dark cave beneath the island. She dives into the darkness without hesitation, terrifying Luke. He compares her raw power to Ben Solo’s, admitting he is afraid. Later, Luke explains the Jedi’s legacy is hubris, citing their failure to stop Sidious. He reveals that he blamed himself for Ben’s fall, telling Rey that Ben turned on him and burned the temple. Rey, however, insists Ben can still be saved.

Canto Bight and the Truth of the Past

Finn and Rose arrive at the casino city of Canto Bight. While Finn is dazzled by the opulence, Rose reveals the city is built on the suffering of others, including children and animals like the Fathiers, exploited by war profiteers selling arms to both sides. They spot the Master Codebreaker but are arrested for a parking violation before they can approach him. In jail, they meet a stuttering slicer named DJ, who offers to help. They escape using BB-8 and a stampede of liberated Fathiers, eventually fleeing the planet on a stolen yacht, the Libertine, with DJ.

On Ahch-To, Rey and Ren’s connection deepens. Ren tells Rey that Luke tried to murder him in his sleep. Confronted by Rey, Luke finally admits the shameful truth: he sensed growing darkness in Ben and, in a fleeting moment of instinct, ignited his lightsaber. Ben woke up, saw the threat, and collapsed the hut on Luke, sealing his fate as Kylo Ren. Convinced there is still good in Ren, Rey leaves Ahch-To to confront him. Luke, intending to burn the Jedi tree, is stopped by the ghost of Yoda. Yoda summons lightning to burn the tree himself, teaching Luke that failure is the greatest teacher and that "we are what they grow beyond."

Infiltration and Mutiny

As the Resistance fleet dwindles—the medical frigate Anodyne and transport Ninka are destroyed—Poe stages a mutiny against Holdo, holding her at blaster-point to buy time for Finn and Rose. On the Supremacy, Finn, Rose, and DJ infiltrate the ship disguised as officers. They reach the tracker room, but are caught when BB-9E spots BB-8. They are captured by Captain Phasma. DJ betrays them, revealing the Resistance's plan to evacuate via cloaked transports in exchange for his freedom.

On the Raddus, Leia awakens and stuns Poe, ending the mutiny. She reveals that Holdo’s plan was to sacrifice the cruiser to distract the First Order while the crew escapes to the mineral planet Crait. Holdo chooses to stay behind to pilot the ship. Poe, finally understanding, boards a transport with Leia. As the First Order begins picking off the defenseless transports based on DJ's intel, Holdo makes a desperate decision.

The Throne Room and the Sacrifice

Rey ships herself to the Supremacy, where Kylo Ren takes her to Snoke. Snoke reveals he bridged their minds to lure Rey and find Luke. He tortures Rey for Luke’s location and orders Kylo to kill her. Instead, Kylo uses the Force to ignite the Skywalker lightsaber sitting beside Snoke, slicing the Supreme Leader in half. Rey and Kylo fight back-to-back, defeating Snoke’s elite Praetorian Guards in a brutal battle. Rey asks Kylo to stop the attack on the fleet, but he refuses, urging her to let the past die and rule the galaxy with him. He forces her to admit her parents were "filthy junk traders" who sold her for drinking money. Rey refuses to join him, and they struggle over the lightsaber until it splits in two, causing an explosion.

Simultaneously, Vice Admiral Holdo aims the Raddus at the Supremacy and engages the hyperdrive. The cruiser shears through the mega-destroyer at lightspeed, obliterating the fleet and tearing the Supremacy apart. In the chaos, Finn and Rose escape execution. Finn battles Captain Phasma, defeating her with a riot baton stroke that shatters her helmet. Phasma falls to her death in the burning wreckage. Finn, Rose, and BB-8 escape in a shuttle toward Crait.

The Battle of Crait

The surviving Resistance forces hole up in an abandoned Rebel base on Crait protected by a massive shield door. Kylo Ren, declaring himself Supreme Leader after blaming Rey for Snoke’s death, lands with an army of AT-M6 walkers and a superlaser siege cannon. The Resistance launches decrepit ski speeders to attack the cannon. Chewbacca and Rey arrive in the Millennium Falcon, drawing TIE fighters away in a chase through the crystal caverns.

As the siege cannon charges, Finn attempts a suicide run to fly down its barrel. At the last second, Rose crashes her speeder into his, saving him. She tells him, "That's how we're gonna win. Not fighting what we hate, saving what we love," before falling unconscious. The cannon fires, breaching the base. The Resistance sends a distress signal, but no allies respond. Hope seems lost.

The Spark and the Projection

Suddenly, Luke Skywalker appears in the base. He shares a quiet moment with Leia, handing her Han’s golden dice and winking at C-3PO. He walks out to face the First Order alone. Kylo Ren orders every gun to fire on him. When the dust settles, Luke stands unharmed, brushing dust off his shoulder. Enraged, Ren goes down to face him. Luke dodges Ren’s angry strikes with ease, apologizing for failing him but warning, "I will not be the last Jedi."

While Luke distracts Ren, Rey uses the Force to lift massive boulders blocking the base's rear exit, allowing the survivors to escape to the Falcon. On the battlefield, Ren finally strikes Luke, but his lightsaber passes through him. Luke reveals he is only a Force projection, still on Ahch-To. He tells Ren, "See you around, kid," and vanishes. On Ahch-To, the strain is too much. Luke gazes at the binary sunset, finds peace, and becomes one with the Force.

Rebirth of the Rebellion

Kylo Ren storms the base only to find it empty, spotting the hanging dice which fade away in his hand. Aboard the Millennium Falcon, Rey and Leia sense Luke’s passing. Rey meets Poe Dameron officially for the first time. As she holds the broken lightsaber, she asks Leia how they can rebuild from such small numbers. Leia smiles, gesturing to the survivors, and says, "We have everything we need."

On Canto Bight, the stable children tell the legend of Luke Skywalker. One boy, Temiri Blagg, is yelled at by his master. He goes outside, uses the Force to pull a broom to his hand, and looks up at the stars, wearing a ring with the Resistance insignia—the spark of hope survives.
