The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Map and the Massacre

Thirty years after the destruction of the second Death Star, the galaxy is once again torn by conflict. Luke Skywalker, the last known Jedi Master, has vanished. Both the First Order, a fanatical successor to the Galactic Empire, and the Resistance, a military force supported by the New Republic and led by General Leia Organa, are desperate to find him. Leia dispatches her most daring pilot, Poe Dameron, on a secret mission to the desert planet Jakku. in the village of Tuanul, Poe meets with the elder Lor San Tekka, who hands him a data storage unit containing a map to Luke’s location.

The meeting is violently interrupted as First Order stormtroopers, led by the ruthless Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma, descend upon the village. Poe and his astromech droid, BB-8, attempt to flee in their X-wing, but the ship's engines are disabled by blaster fire. With no escape, Poe entrusts the map to BB-8, ordering the droid to flee into the desert while he stays behind to cover its escape. In the ensuing chaos, stormtrooper FN-2187 witnesses his squadmate, FN-2003, struck down by blaster fire. In his dying moments, the trooper smears his blood across FN-2187’s helmet, leaving the latter shaken and horrified.

The villagers are rounded up in the town square. Lor San Tekka is brought before Kylo Ren, who demands the map. Tekka defiantly refuses, telling the dark warrior, "I know where you come from. Before you called yourself Kylo Ren." Unmoved, Ren strikes the old man down with his lightsaber. Poe, firing from cover, attempts to kill Ren, but the dark sider freezes the blaster bolt in mid-air using the Force. Poe is captured, and upon Phasma's query regarding the villagers, Ren coldly orders them all slaughtered. FN-2187 stands frozen, refusing to fire his weapon as the massacre unfolds before him.

The Defector and the Scavenger

Aboard the Star Destroyer Finalizer, Kylo Ren brutally interrogates Poe using the Force, eventually ripping the truth from his mind: the map is inside a BB unit on Jakku. Meanwhile, FN-2187, overwhelmed by a crisis of conscience, is confronted by Captain Phasma for his non-compliance. Terrified of "reconditioning," he decides to desert. He frees Poe from his cell, needing a pilot to escape. Stealing a TIE fighter, they blast their way out of the hangar. During the escape, Poe asks the trooper his name. When he replies he only has a number, Poe dubs him "Finn." The TIE is hit by a missile and crashes back onto Jakku. Finn ejects, but upon waking in the desert, he finds only Poe’s jacket and the sinking wreckage, presuming the pilot dead. shedding his armor, he wanders toward civilization.

Elsewhere on Jakku, a lonely scavenger named Rey survives by stripping parts from downed Star Destroyers in the "Graveyard of Giants." She rescues BB-8 from a scavenger named Teedo and refuses to sell the droid to the junk boss Unkar Plutt, despite the offer of a massive amount of food. When Finn arrives at Niima Outpost wearing Poe’s jacket, BB-8 identifies him, and Rey attacks him, believing him a thief. Finn explains he helped Poe escape and is on the run. Their conversation is cut short when the First Order attacks the outpost with an airstrike. With their intended escape ship destroyed, the trio runs toward a "garbage" ship sitting in the lot—the Millennium Falcon.

Legends of the Past

Rey pilots the Falcon through the wreckage of the ship graveyard while Finn mans the gun turret, successfully destroying the pursuing TIE fighters. Once in space, the ship breaks down and is caught in a tractor beam. Expecting the First Order, they hide, only to be boarded by Han Solo and Chewbacca, who have finally reclaimed their lost ship. Han informs them that Luke tried to rebuild the Jedi Order, but an apprentice turned to the dark side, destroying everything, sending Luke into self-imposed exile in search of the first Jedi Temple.

Han’s freighter, the Eravana, is boarded by two criminal gangs, the Guavian Death Gang and Kanjiklub, demanding payment. When they recognize BB-8 and try to take the droid, Rey accidentally releases Han's cargo: three vicious, tentacled Rathtars. In the chaotic skirmish, the beasts devour gang members and nearly catch Finn. The group barely escapes aboard the Falcon, jumping to lightspeed. At Starkiller Base, a planet converted into a superweapon, Supreme Leader Snoke orders General Hux to use the weapon against the New Republic. He also speaks to Kylo Ren—revealed to be Han Solo’s son—warning him that he must face his father to overcome the pull of the light side.

Visions at Maz Kanata's Castle

The group travels to the lush planet of Takodana to seek aid from Maz Kanata, a thousand-year-old pirate queen. In her castle, Finn, terrified of the First Order, decides to flee to the Outer Rim. Meanwhile, Rey is drawn by a mysterious force to the castle’s catacombs. She discovers a wooden chest containing Anakin Skywalker’s lost lightsaber. Upon touching it, she is bombarded by terrifying visions: Cloud City, Luke Skywalker, a slaughter by the Knights of Ren, and her own abandonment on Jakku. Maz Kanata finds her, explaining that the lightsaber calls to her. Terrified of her newfound power, Rey refuses the weapon and flees into the woods.

Suddenly, the sky turns red. The First Order has fired Starkiller Base, its beam tearing through hyperspace to annihilate the Hosnian system, destroying the New Republic capital and its fleet. The First Order then launches a ground assault on Takodana. Maz gives the lightsaber to Finn for safekeeping. A fierce battle ensues; Han and Chewbacca fight alongside Finn, who uses the lightsaber to duel a riot-control trooper. The Resistance X-wings, led by a surviving Poe Dameron, arrive to turn the tide. However, Kylo Ren tracks Rey to the forest. Realizing she has seen the map, he captures her and carries her onto his shuttle, ordering a retreat.

The Resistance and the Interrogation

Han, Chewbacca, and Finn reunite with Leia at the Resistance base on D'Qar. They discover R2-D2, who has been in low-power mode since Luke’s disappearance. As the Starkiller weapon charges to destroy D'Qar, the Resistance devises a desperate plan to destroy the thermal oscillator that stabilizes the planet-sized weapon. Han, Chewbacca, and Finn volunteer to infiltrate the base to disable the shields and rescue Rey.

On Starkiller Base, Kylo Ren attempts to probe Rey’s mind for the map. To his shock, she resists his intrusion and turns the Force back on him, exposing his deepest fear: that he will never be as strong as Darth Vader. Shaken, Ren leaves to consult Snoke. Rey, realizing her potential, uses a Jedi mind trick on a stormtrooper guard, forcing him to release her and drop his weapon. She escapes her cell and begins sneaking through the massive facility.

The Bridge and the Father's Fall

Han, Chewbacca, and Finn crash-land the Falcon on the snowy surface of Starkiller Base. They capture Captain Phasma and force her to lower the planetary shields before dumping her in a garbage chute. They reunite with Rey and plant explosives at the oscillator. As the Resistance X-wings begin their bombing run, Han spots his son, Ben Solo, walking onto a bridge suspended over a massive chasm. Han confronts him, pleading with him to leave the dark side and come home.

Kylo Ren, trembling with emotion, confesses that he is being torn apart and offers his lightsaber to his father. Han reaches out to take it, but Ren’s resolve hardens. He ignites the weapon, impaling his father through the chest. As Han caresses his son’s face one last time and falls into the abyss, Chewbacca roars in anguish, shooting Ren in the side and detonating the explosives. The blast blows a hole in the oscillator, allowing Poe Dameron to fly inside and destroy the weapon.

Duel in the Snow

Kylo Ren, bleeding and enraged, pursues Rey and Finn into the snowy forest. He knocks Rey unconscious with a Force push and engages Finn in a lightsaber duel. Finn fights bravely but is overpowered and grievously wounded. Ren attempts to summon the Skywalker lightsaber from the snow, but it flies past him and into the hand of Rey. The two engage in a ferocious duel. Initially on the defensive, Rey eventually taps into the Force, channeling it to overpower the wounded Kylo Ren, slashing his face and disarming him.

The destruction of the oscillator causes the planet to destabilize and implode. A chasm opens in the ground, separating Rey from the defeated Kylo Ren. Chewbacca arrives in the Falcon to rescue Rey and the unconscious Finn. Snoke orders General Hux to evacuate the base and bring Kylo Ren to him to complete his training. The Resistance heroes escape just as Starkiller Base collapses into a new star.

The Last Jedi

Back on D'Qar, the Resistance celebrates the destruction of the superweapon, though Leia and Rey mourn the loss of Han Solo. R2-D2 suddenly awakens, his systems restoring the rest of the map to Luke Skywalker. Combined with BB-8’s data, the location is revealed: the oceanic planet of Ahch-To. Rey bids farewell to the recovering Finn, kissing him on the forehead.

Traveling aboard the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca and R2-D2, Rey arrives at the remote water world. She climbs a rugged stone staircase to an ancient island peak. There, standing at the edge of a cliff, she finds a hooded figure. Luke Skywalker turns to face her, his expression grim and silent. With tears in her eyes, Rey extends her hand, offering him his father’s lightsaber, silently pleading for his return.
