The Plot
The Capture of Galen Erso
Six years into the reign of the Galactic Empire, Director Orson Krennic and a squad of elite death troopers descend upon the desolate planet Lah'mu. Their target is Galen Erso, a brilliant scientist who fled the Empire to live in hiding. Krennic forcibly recruits Galen to complete his work on the Death Star, a moon-sized battle station capable of destroying entire planets. During the confrontation, Galen’s wife, Lyra, attempts to stop Krennic but is gunned down by the troopers. Their young daughter, Jyn, manages to escape into hiding and is eventually rescued by the extremist rebel Saw Gerrera.
Thirteen years later, an adult Jyn Erso, operating under the alias Liana Halik, is imprisoned in an Imperial labor camp on Wobani. Meanwhile, on the Ring of Kafrene trading outpost, Rebel Intelligence officer Cassian Andor meets an informant named Tivik. Tivik reveals a terrifying secret: an Imperial cargo pilot has defected with news of a "planet killer" weapon being built with kyber crystals. Before stormtroopers can capture them, Cassian kills the panic-stricken informant to protect the intelligence and escapes.
A Dangerous Reunion
The defecting pilot, Bodhi Rook, seeks out Saw Gerrera on the holy moon of Jedha, carrying a holographic message from Galen Erso. However, Saw’s partisan fighters, distrustful of any Imperial, capture Bodhi. Saw subjects the pilot to the Bor Gullet, a psychic creature that tortures its victims to extract the truth, leaving Bodhi temporarily insane.
Rebel forces rescue Jyn from Wobani and bring her to their base on Yavin 4. Mon Mothma and other Alliance leaders convince her to help them contact Saw Gerrera, hoping to locate her father and the weapon. However, General Draven secretly orders Cassian to assassinate Galen Erso to stop the weapon's development. Jyn, Cassian, and the reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO travel to Jedha to find Saw.
The Test on Jedha
On the Death Star, Grand Moff Tarkin questions Krennic’s ability to deliver the weapon on schedule, citing the security leak on Jedha. He demands a test of the superlaser. On the surface of Jedha, Jyn and Cassian are caught in a violent skirmish between Imperial forces and Saw’s partisans. They are aided by Chirrut Îmwe, a blind warrior monk, and his mercenary friend Baze Malbus. The group is captured by the partisans and taken to their secret base in the Catacombs of Cadera.
Saw shows Jyn the hologram from her father. In the message, Galen reveals he built a fatal flaw into the Death Star’s reactor and that the plans are hidden on the planet Scarif. Before the message finishes, the Death Star fires a single-reactor ignition blast at Jedha City. As the city is obliterated, the group barely escapes the expanding shockwave in their U-wing. Saw Gerrera refuses to leave, choosing to die with his headquarters. Tarkin, impressed by the weapon’s power, uses the defection and security leak as a pretext to take control of the Death Star from Krennic.
Betrayal on Eadu
The team tracks Galen to an Imperial research facility on the rainy planet of Eadu. Cassian sets up a sniper position to kill Galen but hesitates, ultimately choosing not to fire. Krennic arrives at the facility and orders the execution of Galen’s engineering team for the security breach. Jyn rushes to save her father just as a Rebel squadron launches a bombing run. Galen is mortally wounded in the attack and dies in Jyn’s arms. The group escapes in a stolen Imperial cargo shuttle, leaving Jyn heartbroken and furious at Cassian’s initial orders.
Desperate to regain favor, Krennic visits Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar. He attempts to appeal to the Sith Lord for an audience with the Emperor, but Vader dismisses his ambition. Vader Force-chokes Krennic, warning him not to "choke on his aspirations" before ordering him to ensure no further leaks occur.
Rogue One
Back on Yavin 4, Jyn proposes a mission to steal the Death Star plans from the Citadel Tower on Scarif. The Rebel Council, paralyzed by fear and skepticism without Galen’s testimony, refuses to authorize the attack. Undeterred, Jyn, Cassian, K-2SO, Chirrut, Baze, Bodhi, and a group of volunteer soldiers commandeer the stolen shuttle. Using the call sign "Rogue One," they depart for Scarif without official orders.
Upon arriving at the tropical planet, the team uses Imperial codes to pass through the shield gate. While the soldiers create a diversion by planting explosives and engaging the garrison, Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO infiltrate the Citadel disguised as Imperial officers. As the battle rages, Admiral Raddus leads the Rebel fleet to Scarif to provide support, having intercepted communications about the unauthorized mission.
The Battle of Scarif
On the ground, the Rebels fight a desperate battle against overwhelming Imperial forces, including AT-ACT walkers. In the Citadel, K-2SO sacrifices himself to lock the vault door, allowing Jyn and Cassian to retrieve the data tape codenamed "Stardust." Bodhi Rook runs a cable to the master switch to open a communication line to the fleet but is killed by a grenade. Chirrut Îmwe marches through blaster fire chanting, "I am one with the Force," and flips the master switch before being gunned down. Baze Malbus, inspired by his friend’s sacrifice, fights until his last breath, dying alongside him.
In space, Admiral Raddus orders a Hammerhead corvette to ram a disabled Star Destroyer, pushing it into another destroyer and crashing both into the shield gate. The gate’s destruction allows the transmission of the plans. Jyn and Cassian climb to the transmission tower atop the Citadel. Krennic ambushes them, but Cassian shoots him, allowing Jyn to transmit the plans to the Rebel flagship.
Sacrifice and Hope
Tarkin arrives in the Death Star and orders the superlaser to fire on the Scarif base to prevent the leak. The blast obliterates the Citadel and the surrounding area. Jyn and Cassian, having completed their mission, embrace on the beach as they are engulfed by the blinding wall of fire, finding peace in their success.
In orbit, Darth Vader’s flagship, the Devastator, intercepts the fleeing Rebel fleet. Vader boards the disabled flagship Profundity, igniting his red lightsaber in a dark corridor. He slaughters rebel soldiers in a terrifying display of power, desperate to reclaim the stolen data tape. The plans are handed off through a crack in the door just seconds before Vader reaches them. The corvette Tantive IV detaches from the flagship and jumps to hyperspace. Aboard, Princess Leia receives the plans, declaring that they have been given "hope."
