The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Elder and the Consequences

Deep within the underground sanctuary of New York City, John Wick prepares to exact his final revenge against the High Table, training relentlessly while hiding under the protection of the Bowery King. His quest takes him to the deserts of Morocco, where he tracks down The Elder, the enigmatic figure known as the "one who sits above the Table." Upon finding him, John executes The Elder, sending a violent message to the global criminal leadership.

In immediate retaliation, the Marquis Vincent de Gramont, a high-ranking French member of the High Table, summons Winston Scott, the manager of the New York Continental, and his loyal concierge, Charon. De Gramont reveals that the High Table has granted him unlimited resources to hunt down and kill John Wick. Furious at Winston's previous failure to assassinate John, the Marquis strips Winston of his managerial duties, declares him "excommunicado," and orders the destruction of the New York Continental. To cement his authority and punish Winston's incompetence, De Gramont personally executes Charon. Following this brutality, the Marquis travels to Paris and recruits Caine, a blind, retired High Table assassin and an old friend of John’s. Despite Caine’s reluctance, he is forced to accept the contract when De Gramont threatens to murder his daughter.

Siege at the Osaka Continental

Seeking refuge, John travels to the Osaka Continental, which is managed by his old friend Koji Shimazu. However, the High Table’s reach is absolute; the Marquis’s right-hand man, Chidi, arrives with a force of Myrmidons and the reluctant Caine to eliminate the target. Akira, Koji’s daughter and the hotel's concierge, senses the impending doom and orders the evacuation of the hotel. Despite her warnings, Koji refuses to abandon John. As the Myrmidons breach the hotel, Akira joins her father, John, and the hotel's staff in a desperate defense against the High Table’s elite forces.

The battle is chaotic and bloody, leading to Akira sustaining a wound. As John attempts to escape the facility, he fights through wave after wave of assassins, eventually crossing paths with Caine. Their duel is interrupted by a "tracker"—a bounty hunter referring to himself as "Mr. Nobody"—who is accompanied by his attack dog. Mr. Nobody has John in his sights but decides to let him go, calculating that the current contract money is insufficient for a target of Wick's caliber. While Akira manages to escape the carnage, her father is not as fortunate; Koji stands his ground against Caine and is killed in a duel of honor.

Rejoining the Ruska Roma

John returns to the ruins of his past life in New York, meeting a vengeful Winston at Charon’s gravesite. Winston, fueled by the loss of his friend and his hotel, suggests a strategic path to freedom: John must challenge the Marquis de Gramont to a formal duel. Under the old laws of the High Table, winning such a duel would free John of all obligations. However, tradition dictates that John can only request a duel on behalf of a recognized crime family. Since he had previously severed his ties, John must travel to the Ruska Roma headquarters in Berlin to petition for reentry into the syndicate.

In Berlin, John meets his adoptive sister, Katia. She agrees to reinstate him, but only if he exacts vengeance for the murder of her father. The target is Killa Harkan, a grotesque German High Table senior and mob boss. John infiltrates Killa’s nightclub to carry out the hit, but Killa, having been tipped off by Caine, is waiting. He invites John to a rigged poker match that quickly dissolves into a violent ambush. John manages to escape the trap and engages Killa in a brutal fight through the crowded club, eventually killing the mob boss and extracting one of his golden teeth as proof of death. With the trophy delivered, Katia welcomes John back into the Ruska Roma.

The Challenge

With his status restored, John formally challenges Vincent de Gramont through Winston. Winston delivers the challenge and adds his own terms: should John win, the New York Continental must be rebuilt, and he must be reinstated as manager. The Marquis agrees to a meeting to set the terms. Under the moderation of The Harbinger, an emissary of the Table, John and the Marquis meet in Paris. They decide on the parameters: the duel will take place at sunrise the following day at Sacré-Cœur, using dueling pistols. The Marquis, cowardly avoiding direct conflict, nominates Caine to fight in his place. The Harbinger issues a final grim warning: if John fails to appear on time at sunrise, both he and Winston will be executed.

As the deadline approaches, the Bowery King arrives in Paris to provide John with a new ballistic suit and a weapon, preparing him for the impossible night ahead.

The Bounty and the Staircase

Determined to prevent the duel from ever happening, Vincent de Gramont places a $26 million bounty on John’s head, broadcasting it to every assassin in Paris. John is forced to fight through hordes of mercenaries on the streets, including a vehicular battle at the Arc de Triomphe. During the chaos, Mr. Nobody corners John again, negotiating the bounty with De Gramont over the phone until it reaches $40 million. However, the dynamic shifts when Chidi arrives and threatens to kill Mr. Nobody's dog. John saves the animal, prompting Mr. Nobody to abandon the contract and assist John instead.

John reaches the base of the 222 steps leading up to Sacré-Cœur, where heavily armed operatives are waiting. He fights his way up, only to be knocked back down to the bottom. Caine, needing John alive to ensure the safety of his own daughter, steps in to help. The two old friends fight side-by-side up the staircase. Near the summit, Chidi nearly overpowers John, but is shot and killed by a vindictive Mr. Nobody. Bloody and battered, John and Caine narrowly reach the summit just as the sun begins to crest.

Duel at Sunrise

The duel commences under the supervision of The Harbinger, with Mr. Nobody watching from the sidelines. John and Caine are issued single-shot pistols and pace off. In the first round, both fire and graze each other. They close the distance for the second round, again inflicting non-lethal wounds. In the third round, Caine fires a shot that hits John in the abdomen, knocking him to the ground. John does not return fire, appearing mortally wounded and unable to stand.

Seeing his enemy fallen, The Marquis arrogantly demands the right to administer the coup de grâce. He claims Caine’s pistol, effectively swapping places with him for the final execution. However, in his hubris, De Gramont fails to notice that John did not discharge his weapon in the third round. As the Marquis aims, John raises his still-chambered gun and shoots Vincent de Gramont in the head, killing him instantly.

Freedom

With the Marquis dead and the terms of the duel satisfied, The Harbinger grants both Caine and John their absolute freedom from the High Table and reinstates Winston’s position as manager of the Continental. Caine walks away a free man. John, bleeding heavily, sits on the steps of the basilica. He reflects on his life and his marriage, whispering the name of his late wife, Helen, before slumping over, succumbing to his injuries.

Sometime later, Winston and the Bowery King stand over a fresh grave in New York. John Wick has been buried next to his wife, Helen, with his tombstone bearing the simple epitaph he requested: "Loving Husband." The two men bid their final farewells to the legendary assassin.

Post-Credits

In a post-credits scene, Caine returns to Paris, carrying a bouquet of flowers to reunite with his daughter, finally free of the High Table's leverage. As he approaches her, a figure emerges from the crowd. It is Akira, wielding a switchblade and seeking vengeance for the death of her father, Koji.
