The Plot
The Vow of the God Butcher
On a scorched and barren world, Gorr, the last of his people, wanders the endless desert carrying his dying daughter, Love. Despite his fervent prayers to his god, Rapu, for salvation, the harsh environment claims his daughter's life, leaving Gorr broken and alone in his grief. Following a whispering voice, Gorr stumbles upon a lush, hidden oasis where he discovers Rapu feasting in luxury. He learns that Rapu has just slain the wielder of the All-Black the Necrosword, an ancient weapon capable of killing deities. When Gorr confronts Rapu about the suffering of his people, the god mocks his devotion and dismisses his loss as insignificant. Consumed by a sudden, dark realization that gods care nothing for their worshippers, Gorr renounces his faith. The Necrosword calls to him, and he seizes it, using its dark power to decapitate Rapu. Corrupted by the weapon's influence, Gorr vows to slaughter every god in existence.
Distress Calls and a Fading Hope
Meanwhile, Thor has been traversing the galaxy with the Guardians of the Galaxy, regaining his physical form and burying his trauma under a guise of adventure. Despite his efforts to find inner peace, he feels empty and contemplates retiring from the hero's life. The calm is broken when the Guardians receive a flood of distress signals detailing the slaughter of various pantheons. One specific signal catches Thor's attention: a wounded Sif warns of a "God Butcher." Thor parts ways with the Guardians to intercept the threat, taking his rock-friend Korg with him. They locate Sif on a snowy battlefield, her arm severed in combat, and learn that Gorr’s next target is New Asgard on Earth.
On Earth, Dr. Jane Foster is fighting a losing battle against stage IV cancer. With chemotherapy proving ineffective, she grows desperate. While researching Viking history, she finds a theory suggesting Mjølnir grants its wielder good health. Drawn by an inexplicable pull, she travels to New Asgard where the shattered pieces of the hammer—which Thor had unknowingly enchanted years ago to protect her—react to her presence. The fragments reassemble, transforming Jane into the Mighty Thor and granting her the power of the Thunder God, masking her illness with divine strength.
Shadows Over New Asgard
That night, Gorr attacks New Asgard, unleashing swarms of shadow monsters spawned from the Necrosword. Thor and Korg arrive to defend the settlement, joined by King Valkyrie. In the heat of battle, Thor is stunned to see Mjølnir flying through the air, wielded by a masked woman who reveals herself to be his ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster. Together, the heroes manage to repel the shadow creatures, but the battle proves to be a diversion. Gorr escapes into the shadows, kidnapping the Asgardian children, including Axl, the son of Heimdall who has inherited his father's all-seeing vision.
Thor uses Axl's magical sight to communicate with the frightened children, deducing that Gorr has taken them to the Shadow Realm. Recognizing that walking into the Shadow Realm without backup is a suicide mission, the group formulates a plan. Thor, the Mighty Thor (Jane), Valkyrie, and Korg decide to travel to Omnipotence City, the parliament of pantheons, to warn the gods and raise an army to rescue the children.
Chaos in Omnipotence City
Arriving at the golden floating metropolis of Omnipotence City, the group disguises themselves to enter the grand council led by Zeus. Thor reveals himself and pleads for assistance, but Zeus, arrogant and fearful of the Necrosword, refuses to help. He believes that hiding in the city is safer and mocks Thor's concerns. When Zeus orders Thor's capture to prevent him from leading Gorr to their location, a brawl ensues. In the chaos, Zeus destroys Korg's rocky body with his signature Thunderbolt, leaving only Korg's face alive and talking.
Enraged by the apparent loss of his friend, Thor catches the Thunderbolt that Zeus hurls at him and flings it back, impaling the King of the Gods through the chest. Valkyrie steals the Thunderbolt weapon, and the group summons their goat-boat to escape the city's guards, barely making it out alive but now armed with a weapon capable of killing the God Butcher. During their journey to the Shadow Realm, the tension settles, and Thor discovers the truth about Jane’s terminal cancer. They share a tender moment, rekindling their romance despite the looming tragedy.
The Trap in the Shadow Realm
Upon entering the desolate, monochrome Shadow Realm, the heroes attempt to locate the children but find the prison empty. They realize too late that it was a trap; Gorr never intended to kill them there, but rather to lure Thor in. Gorr needs Stormbreaker to open the gates of Eternity, a cosmic entity that grants one wish to the first person who reaches it. Gorr intends to wish for the extinction of all gods at once.
A brutal battle erupts. The heroes fight Gorr and his shadow constructs, but the Necrosword's power is amplified in this realm. Valkyrie is stabbed and weakened, and Jane’s transformation begins to falter. To save his friends, Thor summons the Bifrost to transport them back to New Asgard, but in the struggle, Gorr manages to snatch Stormbreaker. The villain uses the axe to open the portal to Eternity, leaving the heroes defeated and weaponless on Earth.
The Final Stand at the Gates of Eternity
Back in New Asgard, Thor learns that every time Jane transforms into the Mighty Thor, Mjølnir purges the chemotherapy from her body, accelerating her cancer and bringing her closer to death. He pleads with her to stay behind and recover while he goes to stop Gorr alone. taking Zeus’s Thunderbolt, Thor travels to the center of the universe to confront the God Butcher.
At the Gates of Eternity, Gorr uses Stormbreaker to pry open the portal. Thor arrives and, outnumbered by shadow monsters, makes a strategic move: he imbues the kidnapped Asgardian children with the "power of Thor" for a limited time. The children, now armed with lightning-charged weapons, battle the shadow monsters, allowing Thor to engage Gorr directly. However, Gorr quickly gains the upper hand, nearly killing Thor. Sensing her love's distress, Jane decides to wield Mjølnir one last time, knowing it will likely end her life. She arrives on Valkyrie's winged horse, saving Thor and joining the fray.
Choosing Love
Together, Thor and Jane overpower Gorr. Jane uses Mjølnir to shatter the Necrosword into fragments, destroying the source of Gorr's corruption, but the effort drains her completely. Thor reclaims Stormbreaker and sends the children back to New Asgard, but he is too late to stop Gorr from entering the realm of Eternity. The gate opens, and the cosmic entity waits to grant a wish.
Thor rushes to Jane's side as she collapses, ignoring Gorr. He calls out to his enemy, urging him to look at what he has truly lost. Thor chooses to spend his final moments holding Jane rather than fighting. Seeing the love between the two gods, Gorr is reminded of his own daughter. The corruption of the sword fades, and Gorr realizes that what he wanted wasn't revenge, but to not be alone. He uses his wish to resurrect his daughter, Love. As the girl returns to life, Jane succumbs to her illness and dissolves into golden dust, entering Valhalla. Gorr asks Thor to watch over his daughter before he dies from the toll of the curse.
Love and Thunder
In the aftermath, New Asgard erects a statue in honor of the Mighty Thor. Sif and Valkyrie continue to lead the community, training the children in self-defense. Korg, whose face has been grafted onto a new rock body, regenerates fully and finds a partner to create new life. Thor adopts Gorr's daughter, fulfilling his promise.
Living on a spaceship, Thor and the young girl form a formidable duo. Thor wields Mjølnir once again, having entrusted Stormbreaker to the girl. Together, they travel the galaxy responding to distress calls, charging into battle as "Love and Thunder." Meanwhile, in a mid-credits scene, a wounded Zeus is shown recovering in Omnipotence City. Furious at his humiliation, he tasks his son, Hercules, with hunting down and killing Thor so that the universe will fear the gods once more. In a post-credits scene, Jane Foster materializes at the gates of Valhalla, where she is welcomed by Heimdall, thanking her for looking after his son.
