The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for Thor: Ragnarok (2017), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Fire Demon and the Prophecy

Imprisoned within the fiery, hellish realm of Muspelheim, Thor finds himself bound in chains and suspended in a cage. With nothing but a decaying skeleton for company, the God of Thunder rambles about his recent adventures, detailing his tireless but ultimately fruitless search for the Infinity Stones and his battles against robotic foes on Earth. His monologue is interrupted when the floor drops out, leaving him dangling before Surtur, the fire demon and ruler of Muspelheim. Surtur taunts the Asgardian, revealing that Odin is no longer on Asgard and that the realm is vulnerable in Thor's absence.

Surtur proclaims that the prophecy of Ragnarök—the complete destruction of Asgard—is imminent and will occur by his hand. He explains that his power will become unstoppable once his crown is united with the Eternal Flame, which burns within Odin's Vault. Seeing his opening, Thor summons Mjølnir, shattering his chains. He engages Surtur’s minions in a kinetic battle before striking down the fire demon himself, claiming Surtur’s skull-like crown as a trophy to prevent the prophecy from coming to pass.

The Imposter King

Thor attempts to return to Asgard, but his calls to Heimdall go unanswered. Eventually, the Bifrost opens, but he is greeted by Skurge, a warrior who has replaced Heimdall and is using his post to impress women with tales of his "exploits." Upon entering the city, Thor finds it strangely altered; a massive statue of Loki has been erected, and "Odin" is found lounging in luxury, watching a theatrical play that melodramatically reenacts Loki’s "heroic" death. Thor, unamused and seeing through the illusion, threatens the King, forcing Loki to drop the charade and reveal his true form.

After ordering Skurge to secure Surtur’s crown in the Vault, Thor forces Loki to accompany him to Earth to retrieve the real Allfather. They seek the assistance of Doctor Strange at the New York Sanctum after Loki is unceremoniously snatched through a portal. Strange questions why they brought Loki back to Earth but agrees to help find Odin on the condition that they leave immediately afterward. He reveals Odin is in Norway, having chosen exile. After subjecting Loki to a portal where he has been "falling for thirty minutes," Strange sends the brothers to their father's location.

The Goddess of Death

In Norway, Thor and Loki find Odin standing near a cliff edge, staring out at the sea. Having broken free of Loki’s spell, the Allfather is lucid but dying. He bids his sons a heartbreaking farewell and confesses a dark secret: they have a sister, Hela, the Goddess of Death. Odin explains that Hela was his executioner during Asgard’s violent conquest of the Nine Realms but was imprisoned when her ambition outgrew his own. He warns that his life force is the only thing keeping her bay, and upon his death, she will be released. With a final "I love you," Odin dissolves into golden energy and fades away.

Moments later, a black mass manifests, and Hela emerges from her prison. When Thor and Loki refuse to kneel, Thor hurls Mjølnir at her. Shockingly, Hela catches the hammer with one hand and crushes it into fragments. Panicked, Loki calls for the Bifrost. As they travel up the beam, Hela intercepts them, knocking both brothers out into the cosmos. She arrives on Asgard alone, instantly killing Volstagg and Fandral. Skurge, terrified, kneels before her. Hela then decimates the entire Asgardian army, including Hogun, using an endless arsenal of necro-swords. She claims the throne, destroys the mural covering her true history, and uses the Eternal Flame to resurrect her giant wolf, Fenris, and her undead Berserker army.

The Contest of Champions

Thor crash-lands on Sakaar, a garbage planet surrounded by cosmic wormholes. He is quickly subdued by a scrapper identified as "142," who attaches an obedience disk to his neck and sells him to the planet's ruler, the Grandmaster. Thor discovers Loki is also on Sakaar but has been there for weeks due to time dilation, ingratiating himself with the Grandmaster's inner circle. Thor is thrown into the gladiator quarters, where he befriends Korg, a rock-creature revolutionary, and realizes that Scrapper 142 is actually an Asgardian Valkyrie, the last of her kind.

Forced into the arena to fight the Grandmaster's beloved champion, Thor is stunned to see the Hulk burst through the gates. Overjoyed, Thor tries to reason with his "friend from work," even attempting Black Widow's "Sun's getting real low" lullaby, but the Hulk smashes him. During the brutal fight, Thor is nearly beaten to death until a vision of Odin sparks his latent lightning powers. Thor turns the tide and is about to win when the Grandmaster cheats, activating the obedience disk to shock Thor into unconsciousness.

The Revengers Assemble

Thor wakes up in the Hulk’s luxurious quarters. He tries to convince the Hulk and Valkyrie to help him save Asgard, but both are reluctant; the Hulk enjoys being celebrated on Sakaar, and Valkyrie is traumatized by her past defeat against Hela. Thor attempts to steal the Quinjet, inadvertently activating a recording of Natasha Romanoff. The emotional message causes the Hulk to revert to Bruce Banner for the first time in two years. Banner, terrified that turning into the Hulk again might be permanent, agrees to help Thor.

The Grandmaster orders a manhunt for the escapees. Valkyrie, having had a change of heart after capturing Loki and remembering her fallen sisters, decides to join the team. She liberates Loki, who claims to have the security codes necessary to escape. They formulate a plan: Korg and Miek will incite a slave revolt as a distraction while the group steals the Grandmaster’s personal vessel, the Commodore. As they approach the ship, Loki attempts to betray Thor to regain favor with the Grandmaster. However, Thor, anticipating his brother's nature, triggers a remote taser disk he had placed on Loki's back, leaving the God of Mischief paralyzed on the floor as the others escape through "The Devil's Anus," the largest wormhole in the sky.

The Fall of Asgard

Back on Asgard, Heimdall has stolen the Bifrost sword and is hiding civilians in an ancient fortress. Hela, unable to launch her conquest without the sword, assaults the fortress. Thor, Valkyrie, and Banner arrive just in time. Thor calls Hela to the throne room for a duel, while Banner and Valkyrie help the refugees escape via the Bifrost bridge. They are cut off by Fenris and the undead army. Banner, knowing the risk, flings himself from the ship to fight the giant wolf. After a painful thud on the bridge, he transforms into the Hulk and engages Fenris in a brutal brawl. Meanwhile, Loki arrives with Korg and the Sakaaran gladiators on a massive vessel to evacuate the people.

In the throne room, Thor is outmatched. Hela slashes his face, taking his right eye. As she prepares to deliver the killing blow, Thor experiences another vision of Odin, who tells him that Asgard is not a place, but a people, and reminds him that he is not the "God of Hammers." Mjølnir was merely a conduit. Empowered by this realization, Thor summons a massive lightning bolt that blasts Hela away. He joins his allies on the bridge, tearing through the undead army with his newfound power. Skurge, disguised among the refugees, has a change of heart and sacrifices himself to save his people, destroying Hela's ship before being killed by her blades.

Ragnarok

Despite their efforts, Hela returns from the lightning blast largely unharmed. Thor realizes that as long as Asgard stands, she draws power from it and cannot be defeated. He makes the difficult decision to fulfill the prophecy rather than stop it. He orders Loki to go to the vault and place Surtur’s crown into the Eternal Flame. On his way, Loki pauses briefly to eye the Tesseract before completing the task. Surtur is reborn, growing to a titanic size and bursting through the palace.

Hela attempts to fight the fire demon, but Surtur is unstoppable. He drives his twilight sword through the planet's core, obliterating Hela and causing the complete destruction of Asgard. From the safety of the refugee ship, Thor and his people watch their home explode into an asteroid field. Thor accepts that this was the only way to save the Asgardians.

A New Journey

In the aftermath, Thor dons an eyepatch, resembling his father. He and Loki reconcile, with Thor acknowledging that Loki finally came through. He assumes the throne as the new King of Asgard, surrounded by Heimdall, Valkyrie, Korg, and the Hulk. When asked where they should go, Thor decides to set a course for Earth.

In a mid-credits scene, as they travel through space, Loki expresses concern about returning to Earth given his past actions. Thor assures him everything will be fine, just as a colossal spacecraft—the Sanctuary II, belonging to Thanos—looms over their ship, casting a massive shadow. In a post-credits scene on Sakaar, the overthrown Grandmaster confronts the rebels, awkwardly declaring the revolution a "draw."
