The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for Deadpool (2016), including the ending and major plot twists.

Love, Cancer, and a Desperate Choice

Wade Wilson, a former special forces operative turned mercenary operating in the gritty underbelly of New York City, finds solace in a local bar where he meets Vanessa Carlysle, an escort. Their initial encounter sparks an intense romantic attachment, leading to a year-long relationship defined by their shared eccentricity and passion. The relationship reaches a peak when Wade proposes to Vanessa, and she happily accepts. However, the moment of joy is shattered instantly when Wade collapses. Medical diagnosis reveals the grim truth: Wade has terminal cancer affecting multiple organs. While Vanessa remains steadfastly by his side, determined to fight the disease, Wade is consumed by the fear of her watching him wither away and die.

In his desperation, Wade is approached by a recruiter from a shadowy, secret program who offers a miracle: not just an experimental cure for his cancer, but the potential to become something more. Although Wade is initially skeptical and refuses the offer, the weight of his mortality and his desire to spare Vanessa the pain of his death drive him to reconsider. Ultimately, he leaves Vanessa in the middle of the night without a proper goodbye to undergo the mysterious procedure.

The Workshop and the Birth of a Mutation

At the secret laboratory, Wade is introduced to the facility's cruel overseer, Ajax, and his super-strength enforcer, Angel Dust. Wade takes an instant dislike to them, masking his fear with incessant humor. Ajax injects Wade with a serum designed to awaken latent mutant genes, but the activation requires extreme adrenaline and stress. To achieve this, Wade is subjected to weeks of brutal torture. Throughout the ordeal, Wade discovers that Ajax’s real name is Francis Freeman and relentlessly mocks him, using the name to undermine the villain's authority.

Frustrated by Wade's defiance and the lack of mutation, Ajax straps Wade into an airtight chamber designed to raise and lower oxygen levels, keeping him constantly on the verge of asphyxiation. Before sealing him in, Ajax reveals the program's true, sinister purpose: they are not creating heroes, but manufacturing super-powered slaves to be sold to wealthy warlords and customers. After days of this suffocation torture, Wade’s mutant genes finally trigger. The mutation grants him an incredible healing factor that aggressively fights his cancer. However, the cancer gains the same healing properties, resulting in a horrific side effect: his entire body and face become severely disfigured and scarred, resembling the texture of a topographic map.

Enraged by his transformation but emboldened by his new power, Wade breaks out of the chamber and attacks Ajax. He gains the upper hand but hesitates when Ajax claims he can cure the disfigurement. Seizing the moment of hesitation, Ajax subdues Wade, brutally impaling him with a steel rebar and leaving him for dead as the laboratory burns to the ground.

The Hunt for Francis

Wade survives the fire thanks to his regeneration abilities. He attempts to return to Vanessa but stops short, terrified that she will be repulsed by his grotesque appearance. Choosing to stay "dead" to her, he isolates himself and consults his best friend, Weasel. Together, they decide that the only path forward is to hunt down Ajax and force him to reverse the disfigurement. Wade adopts the masked vigilante persona "Deadpool," donning a red suit to hide the blood stains, and moves into the home of an elderly, blind woman named Al.

For the next year, Deadpool ruthlessly tracks down Ajax’s associates, interrogating and eliminating them one by one to find their boss. Following a string of violent leads, Deadpool finally locates Ajax in a convoy of cars on a busy expressway. In a chaotic, high-speed battle, Deadpool slaughters the escorts and corners Ajax, demanding the cure. Just as he is about to exact his revenge, the confrontation is interrupted by the arrival of the X-Men Colossus and his trainee, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who have been trying to recruit Deadpool to their cause. Taking advantage of the moral lecture and distraction, Ajax escapes. Colossus handcuffs himself to Deadpool, intending to drag him back to the X-Men’s mansion. Unwilling to go, Deadpool cuts off his own hand to slip the cuffs and escapes, falling off the bridge into a garbage truck. He returns home, where his severed hand slowly and grotesquely regenerates overnight.

Targeting Vanessa

While Deadpool recovers, Ajax visits Weasel’s bar, threatening him to learn Wade’s whereabouts. In the process, Ajax discovers a photo of Vanessa and realizes she is Wade's weakness. Weasel immediately calls Wade to warn him that Vanessa is in danger. Wade rushes to the strip club where Vanessa works, intending to save her, but his insecurity paralyzes him again; he hesitates to show his face, losing precious time. By the time he acts, it is too late—Ajax has already kidnapped her. Ajax and Angel Dust send a message to Deadpool, daring him to meet them for a final showdown on a decommissioned helicarrier in a scrapyard.

Showdown at the Scrapyard

Realizing he cannot fight this battle alone, Deadpool goes to the X-Mansion and convinces Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead to help him save Vanessa. The trio takes a taxicab to the scrapyard, where a massive battle ensues. While Colossus and Negasonic engage the powerful Angel Dust in a destructive brawl, Deadpool carves a path through Ajax’s army of henchmen, using his combat skills and weaponry to reach the top of the carrier.

Deadpool eventually engages Ajax in brutal close combat. Meanwhile, on the ground, Angel Dust knocks out Colossus. To save him, Negasonic uses her explosive powers to blast Angel Dust away, but the force of the explosion accidentally destroys the support beams holding the massive helicarrier upright. As the structure begins to tip over and collapse, Colossus regains consciousness, grabbing Negasonic and Angel Dust to carry them to safety. Amidst the falling debris, Deadpool manages to enclose Vanessa in a safety pod, successfully protecting her from the crash.

No Cure and Reconciliation

The helicarrier crashes, leaving the scrapyard in ruins. Ajax, surviving the fall, attacks Wade one last time. Wade overpowers him and pins him down, holding a gun to his head. Once again, Deadpool demands the cure for his disfigurement. Ajax looks up and reveals the crushing truth: there never was a cure. The procedure is permanent.

Colossus steps in, pleading with Deadpool to spare his enemy’s life, delivering a speech about the nature of a true hero and the value of mercy. Wade listens for a moment, then abruptly ignores the advice and summarily executes Ajax with a bullet to the head. With his vengeance complete but his face uncured, Wade turns to Vanessa. She approaches him and gently removes his mask, revealing his scarred visage. Although she is angry that he left her and hid away, she affirms that her love for him hasn't changed. Accepting him fully, disfigurement and all, they reconcile with a kiss as the camera pans away.
