The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Gathering Storm and a Deadly Meeting

In the summer of 1997, the Wizarding World faces its darkest hour. Rufus Scrimgeour, the newly appointed Minister for Magic, addresses the public, admitting that Lord Voldemort has returned and poses a grave threat, though he defiantly insists the Ministry remains strong. Meanwhile, the trio prepares to leave their childhood lives behind for a perilous mission to destroy the Horcruxes. At the Dursley home, Harry Potter watches his relatives pack their car to go into hiding; he chooses not to join them, knowing he must face his destiny without the Order of the Phoenix's direct aid. Hermione Granger makes a heartbreaking sacrifice, casting the Obliviate charm on her parents to erase herself from their memories and photographs to protect them. Ron Weasley, too, steels himself for the journey at the Burrow.

Concurrently, a chilling council takes place at Malfoy Manor. Severus Snape arrives and joins a long table where Lord Voldemort presides over his Death Eaters. Snape provides the specific date and time Harry will be moved from Privet Drive. Voldemort, seeking to bypass the twin-core connection that causes a stalemate between his wand and Harry’s, demands a new wand. He humiliates Lucius Malfoy for his recent failures, seizing Lucius's wand and spitefully snapping off its snake-head adornment. To demonstrate his cruelty, Voldemort introduces the captive Charity Burbage, the former Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts. He mocks her advocacy for Wizard-Muggle coexistence before killing her with the Killing Curse and allowing his snake, Nagini, to devour her corpse.

The Seven Potters and the Sky Battle

The Order of the Phoenix arrives at Privet Drive to escort Harry to safety. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody explains that they cannot use Apparition or the Floo Network due to Ministry monitoring, necessitating a flight to the Burrow. To confuse any potential attackers, six members of the group—Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Fleur, and Mundungus Fletcher—drink Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves as identical decoys of Harry. Before departing in the sidecar of Sirius Black's motorbike with Hagrid, Harry releases his owl, Hedwig, instructing her to meet him at the Burrow. However, the plan is compromised; as soon as the "Seven Potters" take to the sky, they are ambushed by a swarm of Death Eaters.

A chaotic aerial battle ensues over London. During the fighting, Hedwig is killed, and Mad-Eye Moody falls to his death when Mundungus Fletcher panics and flees. Voldemort himself joins the pursuit, identifying the real Harry. He attacks, but Harry’s wand reacts of its own accord, overpowering Lucius Malfoy’s wand and destroying it. The survivors crash-land at the Burrow, where the grim toll of the night is realized. George Weasley has lost an ear to a curse by Snape. Bill Weasley confirms that Mundungus fled the moment he saw the Dark Lord. Overwhelmed by guilt and visions of Voldemort, Harry attempts to leave to protect his friends, but Ron convinces him to stay, reminding him that the war is bigger than just one person.

The Will of Albus Dumbledore

The following morning, Rufus Scrimgeour arrives at the Burrow to execute Albus Dumbledore's will. He interrogates the trio while handing over specific bequests. To Ron, Dumbledore left his Deluminator, a device capable of capturing and restoring light. To Hermione, he bequeathed his personal copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a collection of children's stories. To Harry, he left the very first Golden Snitch he ever caught. Scrimgeour reveals that Dumbledore also left Harry the Sword of Godric Gryffindor, but the Ministry has refused to release it, claiming it is Hogwarts property and currently missing.

The tension is briefly lifted by the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour. During the reception, Harry meets Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna’s father, who wears a necklace displaying a strange triangular symbol. Harry also learns from Elphias Doge and Auntie Muriel that the Dumbledore family held dark secrets, including the existence of an estranged brother, Aberforth, and a connection to the historian Bathilda Bagshot in Godric’s Hollow. The festivities are shattered when a silvery lynx Patronus sent by Kingsley Shacklebolt appears, delivering a terrifying warning: "The Minister has died. The Ministry has fallen. They are coming." Moments later, Death Eaters attack, torching the marquee. In the ensuing panic, Lupin orders Harry to flee. Harry finds Ron and Hermione, and the three Apparate away to the safety of Muggle London.

The Hunt for R.A.B.

Taking refuge in a cafe on Shaftesbury Avenue, the trio discusses their next move. Their sanctuary is short-lived as two Death Eaters, Antonin Dolohov and Thorfinn Rowle, disguised as workmen, ambush them. A violent skirmish erupts, ending with the trio subduing the attackers. Hermione wipes the Death Eaters' memories to cover their tracks, and the group retreats to 12 Grimmauld Place. There, they solve the mystery of "R.A.B.," the person who stole the real Horcrux locket. It was Regulus Arcturus Black, Sirius’s younger brother. Kreacher, the house-elf, reveals that Mundungus Fletcher stole the locket from the house after Sirius died. Harry commands Kreacher to find the thief.

While hiding at Grimmauld Place, the trio learns that the Ministry, now led by puppet Minister Pius Thicknesse, has begun persecuting Muggle-borns and has branded Harry "Undesirable No. 1." Harry suffers a vision of Voldemort torturing and killing the wandmaker Gregorovitch in a search for something. Kreacher and Dobby eventually return with Mundungus, who confesses that he was forced to bribe a Ministry official with the locket. The official was none other than Dolores Umbridge.

Infiltration of the Ministry

Desperate to retrieve the Horcrux, Harry, Ron, and Hermione use Polyjuice Potion to impersonate Ministry employees and infiltrate the subterranean headquarters. They find a dystopian regime where blood status is aggressively monitored. The group is separated; Ron finds himself escorting Mary Cattermole to a trial, while Hermione shadows Umbridge. Harry searches Umbridge's office, finding only files on the Order members, but no locket. He reunites with Ron at the courtrooms, where Umbridge is interrogating Mary Cattermole while Dementors hover over the accused.

Noticing the locket around Umbridge’s neck, Harry drops his disguise in a fit of rage and stuns her. He snatches the locket, and the trio fights their way out, rescuing Mary Cattermole in the process. They reach the fireplaces to escape, but Yaxley grabs hold of them as they Disapparate. To shake him off, Hermione forces a second Apparition mid-flight, which results in Ron getting "splinched," sustaining a severe injury to his arm. They crash into the Forest of Dean, unable to return to Grimmauld Place now that Yaxley knows its location.

The Locket's Curse and Ron's Departure

Hermione tends to Ron’s wounds and places protective enchantments around their tent. They attempt to destroy the locket with spells, but it remains scratched. With no other choice, they decide to wear it in turns for safekeeping. The locket exerts a malign influence, amplifying the wearer's fears and aggression. Ron, weakened by his injury and worried about his family, is hit hardest. As they wander the countryside aimlessly, weeks turn into months. Hermione discovers that the Snitch Dumbledore left Harry has "flesh memory," and Harry finds that pressing it to his lips reveals the cryptic inscription: "I open at the close."

One night, Hermione realizes why Dumbledore bequeathed the Sword of Gryffindor: it is Goblin-made and impregnates itself with substances that make it stronger—specifically, the Basilisk venom Harry used in his second year. The Sword can destroy Horcruxes. However, when she shares this breakthrough, the locket drives Ron to a breaking point. Overcome by jealousy and the belief that Harry has no plan, Ron accuses Harry and Hermione of growing too close. He forces Hermione to choose, and when she stays with Harry, Ron storms off into the wilderness, leaving them devastated.

The Trap at Godric's Hollow

Harry and Hermione try to maintain their morale, sharing a quiet, melancholic dance in the tent, but the sorrow of Ron's absence lingers. Deciding to act on a hunch, they travel to Godric's Hollow on Christmas Eve, hoping Dumbledore may have hidden the Sword there. In the village graveyard, they find the graves of Harry’s parents. Hermione also notices a grave bearing the name "Ignotus Peverell" marked with the same strange symbol Xenophilius Lovegood wore.

An elderly woman, Bathilda Bagshot, watches them and beckons them into her home. Inside, Harry finds a picture of the young thief from his visions—Gellert Grindelwald. Bathilda separates Harry from Hermione, leading him upstairs. Speaking in Parseltongue, she reveals herself to be a trap; Bathilda’s body is merely a shell possessed by Voldemort's snake, Nagini. The snake attacks viciously. Hermione rushes up and blasts the snake away, and the two barely escape by jumping out a window and Disapparating. In the chaos of the escape, Harry’s wand is accidentally snapped and destroyed.

The Silver Doe and the Sword

Harry awakens in the Forest of Dean to find Hermione keeping watch. She shares the grim news about his wand and identifies the man in the photo as Grindelwald. That night, while keeping watch, Harry sees a patronus in the shape of a silver doe. It leads him deep into the woods to a frozen pond. Beneath the ice lies the Sword of Gryffindor. Harry breaks the ice and dives in to retrieve it, but the locket around his neck senses the danger. It constricts violently, strangling him and dragging him down.

Just as Harry loses consciousness, Ron returns, diving in to save him and retrieving the Sword. Once safe on land, Harry insists Ron must be the one to destroy the locket. When Harry opens it, the Horcrux unleashes a torrent of black smoke that forms terrifying illusions, taunting Ron with his deepest insecurities and showing a vision of Harry and Hermione engaging in a passionate kiss. Overcoming his demons, Ron strikes the locket with the Sword, shattering it. The friends return to the tent, where Hermione is initially furious at Ron but eventually accepts his return. Ron explains that the Deluminator guided him back to them when he heard Hermione’s voice.

The Tale of the Three Brothers

Seeking answers about the recurring symbol, the reunited trio visits the Lovegood home. Xenophilius Lovegood explains that the symbol represents the Deathly Hallows. He urges them to read The Tale of the Three Brothers, which tells of three magical objects created by Death: the Elder Wand (an unbeatable wand), the Resurrection Stone (to recall the dead), and the Cloak of Invisibility. He claims that possessing all three makes one the "Master of Death."

However, the visit is a trap. Xenophilius has secretly summoned the Death Eaters, desperate to trade Harry for his daughter Luna, who has been kidnapped. As the Death Eaters destroy the house, the trio manages to escape, but not before Hermione ensures the Death Eaters see Harry, validating Xenophilius's claim to protect Luna. back in the forest, a group of Snatchers catches up to them. Hermione hits Harry with a Stinging Jinx to disfigure his face just as they are captured. In a vision, Harry sees Voldemort interrogating an imprisoned Grindelwald, who laughs and claims the Elder Wand was buried with Dumbledore.

Escape from Malfoy Manor

The Snatchers take the trio to Malfoy Manor. The Malfoys and Bellatrix Lestrange are summoned. Draco is asked to identify Harry but hesitates. Bellatrix panics when she sees the Sword of Gryffindor, believing it was stolen from her vault at Gringotts. She orders Harry and Ron to the cellar while she brutally tortures Hermione upstairs for information. In the cellar, the boys find Luna, Ollivander, and Griphook the Goblin. Desperate, Harry looks into his shard of a two-way mirror and sees a blue eye staring back; he begs for help.

Dobby the House-elf appears, sent by Aberforth Dumbledore. He transports Luna and Ollivander to safety at Shell Cottage, then returns to free Harry and Ron. They storm the drawing room to save Hermione. A fierce duel erupts. Harry disarms Draco, and Ron rescues Hermione. Dobby drops a chandelier to cover their escape, declaring he is a free elf. As they Disapparate, Bellatrix throws her silver knife into the teleporting void. They land on the beach near Shell Cottage, but the victory is tragic; Bellatrix’s knife has struck Dobby in the chest. Harry holds the faithful elf as he dies, his last words being Harry's name. The trio buries Dobby without magic, honoring him as a free elf.

The Thief of the Elder Wand

While Harry mourns, Lord Voldemort arrives at Hogwarts. He approaches the white marble tomb of Albus Dumbledore on the island in the Black Lake. With a wave of his hand, he cracks the stone covering open, revealing Dumbledore’s preserved body, his hands clutching the Elder Wand. Voldemort snatches the wand from his dead rival's grasp. As he raises it toward the sky, he unleashes a bolt of lightning, signaling that the Dark Lord now possesses the most powerful weapon in existence.
