The Plot
The Nightmare and the World Cup
In the early morning hours of August 16, 1994, an elderly caretaker named Frank Bryce is murdered within the Riddle House by Lord Voldemort. The Dark Lord is apparently plotting to get to Harry Potter with the aid of his servant Wormtail and an unidentified young man. Far away, Harry is jolted awake from a vivid dream depicting this very event by Hermione Granger.
Harry then travels by Portkey to the 422nd Quidditch World Cup alongside the Weasleys, where they meet Amos Diggory and his son, Cedric. Together, they witness the high-stakes match resulting in the defeat of Bulgaria by Ireland. However, the festivities are cut short after the match when a gang of Death Eaters sparks terror throughout the campsite. In the ensuing confusion, Harry is separated from the others and knocked unconscious. After the destruction of the campsite, the unidentified young man from Harry's dream appears and casts the Dark Mark into the sky, fleeing only when the others locate Harry.
The Triwizard Tournament
Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrive at Hogwarts for the new term, where they learn that the prestigious Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at the school that year. Delegations of students from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and the Durmstrang Institute arrive to take part in the tournament. During the introductions in the Great Hall, Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody enters dramatically and is introduced as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher for the year.
The Goblet of Fire, a magical object responsible for selecting the participants, chooses Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons, Viktor Krum for Durmstrang, and Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts. However, before the celebrations can begin, an unexpected fourth name is ejected from the goblet: Harry Potter. Albus Dumbledore immediately proceeds to interrogate Harry as to how his name got into the goblet. Although his innocence is confirmed by Moody, Harry is still required to compete, as Barty Crouch Snr states that Harry is under a magical binding contract. The majority of the school believes Harry cheated to enter, and this incident causes a jealous Ron to shun Harry.
The First Task and the Yule Ball
Harry soon learns that the first task is to steal a Golden Egg from a dragon after Rubeus Hagrid takes him into the Forbidden Forest to show him the creatures. Harry informs Cedric of the upcoming danger and, with assistance from Moody, learns to utilize his strengths. During the task, Harry summons his Firebolt broomstick and successfully captures the egg. Watching the performance, Ron realizes that Harry would never knowingly put himself in such mortal danger without prior knowledge. The two make up and begin talking once more.
During the winter holidays, Hogwarts plays host to a formal Yule Ball. The evening ends on a bad note for the group, as Ron jealously discovers that Hermione has attended as the date of Viktor Krum. Later, Harry experiences a dream similar to the one he had over the summer, but this time from the point of view of Frank Bryce, waking just as Frank is killed by the Killing Curse. Grateful for the earlier tip-off about the dragons, Cedric returns the favor by telling Harry how to solve the clue hidden within the egg, advising him to "take a bath."
The Black Lake
Harry listens to the Golden Egg in the Prefect's Bathroom and correctly deduces that the second task involves a trip into the Black Lake to recover something that has been taken from him. Having obtained Gillyweed from Neville Longbottom before the task, Harry uses it to breathe underwater, swimming through the lake for an hour to find the hostages. He rescues Ron from the Merpeople, but also frees Gabrielle Delacour, as her sister Fleur does not arrive due to being attacked by Grindylows. Although Gabrielle is not his hostage, Harry's act of saving her earns him high marks for moral fiber, granting him second place and tying his points with Cedric, as well as earning him two kisses from Fleur herself.
The Madness of Mr. Crouch
Following the task, Harry meets with Barty Crouch Snr, who congratulates him on his achievements, stating that Harry's parents would be very proud of him. Crouch's conversation is abruptly cut off by Moody, who begins to make accusations that Crouch is trying to recruit Harry. As Crouch walks toward Moody, he flicks his tongue in a peculiar manner which seems to alarm himself, before hurriedly leaving. Later, while wandering the forest with Hagrid and the others, Harry discovers Crouch's corpse. He heads to Dumbledore's office, where he overhears Cornelius Fudge arguing with Dumbledore, adamantly refusing to cancel the tournament lest he be "seen as a coward."
Dumbledore, Fudge, and Moody leave the office when they realize Harry is present. Before going, Dumbledore tells Harry he can have a Licorice Snap but warns they are a "wee bit sharp." In his haste, Harry picks some of the candy up, but they start jumping around and biting his hand. He stumbles and hits a hidden floor switch, revealing a Pensieve. Staring into the mist, Harry falls into the depths of the memory and lands in a courtroom. He witnesses a trial where Igor Karkaroff admits to being a Death Eater and reveals that Crouch Snr had a son by the same name who was also involved. Harry suddenly recalls that Crouch's son looks exactly like the unknown man in his dreams. When he informs Dumbledore of this recollection, the headmaster urges him to put it out of his mind for now.
The Dark Mark and the Maze
While making his way back to Gryffindor Tower, Harry catches sight of Karkaroff showing his darkening Dark Mark to Severus Snape in a potions store cupboard while they argue. Snape maliciously taunts Harry about the supposed thefts of Boomslang skin from his private stores and suggests that Harry and his friends are brewing Polyjuice Potion, threatening to use Veritaserum on Harry if any more ingredients go missing.
The third task consists of a massive maze, where the champions need only find the Triwizard Cup placed in the center by Alastor Moody. The maze is enchanted, blowing gusts of wind to disorient the champions. Inside, Krum stuns Fleur and attempts to do the same to Cedric, but is stunned when Cedric retaliates with a Disarming Charm. Harry stops Cedric from attacking the defenseless Krum further and runs off, spotting the cup. They race toward it, but Cedric is ensnared by roots and nearly engulfed. Harry saves him, and together they agree to grab the cup simultaneously, claiming victory for Hogwarts.
The Graveyard of Little Hangleton
Upon touching the cup, the two are teleported to the graveyard of Little Hangleton. Harry instantly recalls his dreams of this specific place. Before he can explain, Wormtail and Lord Voldemort arrive, causing Harry to clutch his scar in agony. Seeing the danger, Harry desperately yells for Cedric to get back to the cup, but a cauldron standing between them activates, intensifying the pain in Harry's scar. Wormtail casts the Killing Curse, murdering Cedric instantly, and Harry is pinned to a statue of the angel of death.
Wormtail drops the frail form of Voldemort into the potion. He adds a bone of Voldemort's father, cuts off his own hand as the flesh of a servant, and forcibly draws blood from Harry as the blood of an enemy. These additions revive Lord Voldemort, who rises fully formed. He summons the Death Eaters to the graveyard and rewards Wormtail with a new silver hand. Voldemort admonishes his followers for abandoning him and explains how Harry survived while he was rendered powerless. He touches Harry's scar, inflicting torture, before freeing the injured boy to force him into a duel.
Priori Incantatem
Voldemort tortures Harry with the Cruciatus Curse before they duel. As their spells collide, the effect of Priori Incantatem occurs. The spirits of the people killed by Voldemort's wand—Harry's parents, Cedric, and Frank Bryce—emerge from the tip of Voldemort's wand and watch the struggle. Harry's father speaks to him, promising that when the connection is broken, the spirits will create a diversion to hold Voldemort and the Death Eaters for a few seconds. Cedric asks Harry to bring his body back to his parents. Harry holds on until his mother orders him to let go. Breaking the connection, the spirits swarm Voldemort, giving Harry enough time to run to Cedric's body, summon the Triwizard Cup with the Accio charm, and teleport away as Voldemort roars in fury at his failed plan.
The Impostor Revealed
Harry arrives back at Hogwarts, where the crowd's cheers turn to horror upon seeing Cedric's corpse. An exhausted Harry tries to tell Dumbledore what happened, but in the chaos, Moody secretly guides Harry away from the scene and into his office. There, Moody reveals that he has been behind all the events of the year: it was he who put Harry's name in the Goblet, suggested Hagrid show Harry the dragons, informed Cedric about the egg clue, gave Neville the book about Gillyweed, bewitched Viktor in the maze, and turned the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey.
Dumbledore, realizing the real Moody would never remove Harry from his protection, forcibly breaks into the office with Snape and McGonagall and disarms the impostor. Snape forces Veritaserum upon Moody, who indicates a magical trunk where the professors discover the real Alastor Moody imprisoned. The Polyjuice Potion wears off, and the impostor is revealed to be Barty Crouch Jnr. He had impersonated Moody to ensure Harry reached the graveyard and had been stealing ingredients from Snape's stores. As the professors leave, Snape stays to guard Bartemius, pointing his wand at his face. Bartemius makes a final, snake-like flick of his tongue—his trademark move.
The Parting of the Ways
A Memorial Feast is held in the Great Hall in memory of Cedric Diggory. During the assembly, Dumbledore announces to the school, against the Ministry's will, that Lord Voldemort is back once more. Afterward, Harry, Ron, and Hermione reflect on the year's harrowing events, fully aware that Hogwarts will never be the same again.
