The Plot
The Hermit and the Watchful Eye
On a small, desolate island off the rugged coast of Scotland, Michael Mason leads a solitary existence, occupying a small house accompanied only by a lighthouse, a boathouse, and his loyal dog, Jack. A former operative of the elite government kill team known as the Black Kites, Mason has chosen total isolation to escape his past. To sustain himself, he relies on weekly supply drops delivered by Jessie and her uncle, a man who served with Mason years ago, though Jessie remains unaware of this connection. Mason observes their arrival from a distance, never engaging. One day, Jessie rows to shore with a crate of supplies and leaves a small, wrapped gift box behind before departing. Mason retrieves the crate but deliberately leaves the gift in the boathouse, refusing to forge any emotional attachments. He spends his days in contemplative silence, drinking, walking with Jack, and playing chess against himself.
Meanwhile, in London, the political climate is tense. A high-ranking official named Manafort is being grilled by a government committee regarding his controversial surveillance program, codenamed THEA. The committee accuses Manafort of turning the UK into a police state by tapping into every phone and camera in the country. Manafort defends THEA, citing its success in preventing terror attacks. Following the hearing, the Prime Minister meets with Manafort to discuss the PR fallout. They strike a clandestine deal: Manafort will be publicly fired to demonstrate accountability, and his protégé, Roberta, will take his place. In reality, Manafort is granted permission to "return to the shadows," continuing to run his Black Kite operatives and the THEA program without oversight.
The Storm and the Rescue
Several days later, a severe storm batters the coast. Despite the dangerous conditions, Jessie and her uncle attempt a supply run to Mason’s island. Her uncle urges her to be quick, but when Jessie reaches the cottage door, she knocks loudly, determined to confront the recluse. When Mason answers, she tries to hand him the gift he previously ignored, remarking, "Most people say thank you." Mason coldly warns her never to approach his door again. Undeterred, Jessie jams her foot in the door, insisting she isn't afraid of him, but Mason forces it shut. The delay proves catastrophic; the storm intensifies, and the currents become violent.
As Jessie attempts to row back, both her boat and her uncle’s larger vessel are capsized by the raging waves. Mason, watching from his window, sees them disappear and immediately springs into action. He launches his motorized boat from the boathouse ramp and dives into the freezing water. He finds Jessie tangled in ropes and cuts her free, but when he dives deeper, he discovers her uncle trapped in the cabin of his boat, already drowned. Unable to save him, Mason surfaces with Jessie and hauls her back to the safety of the island.
Sanctuary Under Siege
Jessie wakes up the next day with a badly infected, bruised ankle. Mason breaks the news of her uncle's death, leaving her devastated and effectively orphaned. For the next few days, they fall into a routine as she heals; she watches him drink and play chess, eventually finding a knife among his things. She also discovers he has finally opened her gift: a snow globe featuring a lighthouse. When Mason approaches to check her injury, a frightened Jessie threatens him with the knife. Instead of anger, Mason calmly teaches her the correct way to hold it. He explains he cannot call the police because of his past, but assures her she can leave once she is mobile. Mason realizes her infection requires proper antibiotics, forcing him to travel to the mainland.
Although Mason is careful to avoid CCTV, he is inadvertently captured in the background of a civilian's cell phone video. The footage is fed into the THEA system, which instantly flags him as a priority terrorist target. In London, Roberta sees the alert and dispatches a kill squad. Simultaneously, Manafort receives the notification at his home and realizes his "golden boy" has resurfaced, threatening to expose buried secrets.
The Lighthouse Raid
Mason returns to the island with the medicine but hears the approach of a boat. He hides Jessie in the bathroom and prepares for a siege. A six-man kill squad lands on the beach, but Mason turns the environment into a weapon. He flips a switch to release a net, dragging one mercenary into the sea to drown. He then floods the area with blinding lights, rendering the squad's night vision useless. Mason drops a massive boulder on a second attacker and smashes a lantern over a third, igniting him with a flare gun. As the chaotic fight continues, a soldier reaches the main house and shoots Mason's dog, Jack, dead when the animal attacks him. The soldier drags Jessie out to the beach.
Mason ruthlessly dispatches the remaining enemies, stabbing one in the neck and pushing him off a cliff, and impaling another on a hook in the boathouse. Seeing the final man dragging Jessie toward a boat, Mason shoots him dead. After confirming his dog is gone, a grieving Mason gathers supplies and calls an old contact, stating he is on the run "with baggage." He and Jessie flee the island, leaving a scene of total carnage that shocks Roberta when her team later investigates.
Hunters and Prey
Mason and Jessie arrive at a remote farmhouse on the mainland. Mason takes time to teach Jessie how to handle an assault rifle taken from the island. They attempt to enter the house but are stopped by the owner wielding a shotgun. Jessie manages to flank the farmer, politely asking him to drop his weapon and pleading for help for the wounded Mason. Meanwhile, Roberta intercepts a police call from the farm and dispatches an operative named Workman to apprehend Mason. However, Workman is secretly loyal to Manafort, who issues an override order: Mason and the girl are to be killed.
While Mason is being patched up, the farmer's son admits he called the police. Officers arrive, but Roberta orders them to stand down. As the farmer exits his house, he is shot dead by a sniper—Workman, who mistook him for Mason. Realizing the operative has gone rogue, Roberta tries to intervene, but Workman cuts communications. Mason and Jessie slip out a side door; Mason disables the police officers non-lethally and steals a cruiser. Workman pursues them in a high-speed chase, which ends when Mason causes Workman’s car to flip over. They later swap the police car for a civilian vehicle to cover their tracks.
Sins of the Past
The fugitives reach the secluded home of Arthur Booth, Mason’s former comrade. Mason hopes to secure safe passage for Jessie, who he insists is innocent. While Jessie explores the house and finds Arthur's cache of terminal cancer medication, Mason learns a hard truth: Arthur had tried to hide Mason by swapping his file with a random civilian, but Manafort intercepted the swap, replacing Mason's file with that of a terrorist. This manipulation is why the kill squad was sent to the island. Arthur reveals he is dying and cannot help much, but he offers them shelter.
Workman, having survived the crash, tracks them to the house. A brutal fight ensues in the library between Mason and the mercenary. Workman gains the upper hand, holding a knife to Mason's throat. Jessie intervenes, pointing a gun at Workman and begging him to stop, trying to appeal to his humanity. Unmoved, Workman disarms her and attempts to kill them both. Mason tackles him, allowing the trio to flee in Arthur's car as Workman fires upon them. Later, in town, Arthur gives Mason a burner phone and warns them about cameras. Despite their caution, a dashcam captures them. Manafort deletes the footage from the THEA system to hide it from Roberta and sends Workman the coordinates. Roberta, realizing THEA is compromised, sets a trap to lock Manafort out of the system.
The Nightclub Extraction
With few options remaining, Mason takes Jessie to a high-end nightclub owned by Kamal, a human trafficker. After overpowering the bouncers, Mason demands an audience. He leverages the current political shift, warning Kamal that without Manafort's direct protection, Kamal is a loose end that will be cut. Convinced, Kamal agrees to provide Jessie with a new identity, money, and passage on a boat leaving in thirty minutes. Jessie refuses to leave Mason, but he insists it is the only way to keep her safe.
Manafort sends a hit team to the club, while Roberta dispatches her own squad to capture Mason alive. As Manafort’s killers storm the building, Mason engages them in a violent firefight. During the chaos, one of the mercenaries grabs Jessie and drags her out. With remote assistance from Arthur, who has hacked into the city's camera network, Mason evades Roberta's team and chases down Jessie's captors, rescuing her and speeding toward the docks.
The Final Loose End
At the extraction point on the Isle of Dogs, Mason forces a reluctant Jessie onto the boat that will take her to safety. As the boat departs, Workman arrives, and a fierce gunfight erupts. When both men run out of ammunition, the conflict devolves into a brutal hand-to-hand brawl. Workman draws a knife, while Mason improvises a weapon by attaching a heavy pipe to a length of chain. Mason swings the weapon, striking Workman in the head with crushing force, breaking his neck and finally killing the relentless assassin.
Checkmate
Days later, Manafort is at his lavish mansion, watching the news as Roberta deals with the public fallout of his rogue operations. He pours a drink and notices his two guards outside are dead. Turning around, he finds Mason standing in his living room. Manafort tries to talk his way out, calling Mason his "golden boy" and urging him to rejoin the fold now that they have full autonomy to protect the country from the shadows. He chides Mason for growing a conscience years ago when he refused to assassinate an Iranian scientist who defected. Mason retorts that the scientist was an innocent man—and that is why he is here now. Unwilling to let the corruption continue, Mason shoots Manafort dead.
Three months later, Jessie is settled into a quiet life in Spain. Roberta and MI6 keep a distant watch over her, anticipating that Mason might one day surface. As Jessie sits at a café, a waiter hands her a small bag, saying it was left by a friend. Inside, she finds a chess piece. She looks up to see Mason watching her from the street. Content that she is safe, he disappears into the crowd before she can run to him. Jessie smiles, knowing he is out there, watching over her.
