The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), including the ending and major plot twists.

Echoes of the Past and the Weight of Toruk

The story opens within the ethereal depths of a dream sequence. Lo'ak and his late brother, Neteyam, soar through the Pandoran skies on their ikrans, a moment of joyous freedom that contrasts sharply with the reality of their loss. In this vision, Neteyam turns to Lo'ak and asks, "How did I die?" Stricken with guilt, Lo'ak recounts the tragic events, but Neteyam offers a gentle absolution, reassuring his younger brother that his death was not Lo'ak’s fault. This spiritual communion ends as Lo'ak detaches his queue from the Spirit Tree, returning to a world overshadowed by mourning.

In the wake of Neteyam’s burial, the Sully family struggles to find peace among the Metkayina clan. Neytiri is consumed by a burgeoning hatred for humanity, her grief manifesting as a deep-seated resentment toward anything associated with the "Sky People." Meanwhile, Jake, Lo'ak, and their companions scavenge the wreckage of the S-76 SeaDragon from the Skirmish at the Three Brothers, recovering Recom M69-AR assault rifles and other high-tech weaponry. This defiance of the Three Laws of Eywa—specifically the prohibition against using metals from the ground—angers Tonowari and Ronal. Tonowari urges Jake to reclaim his mantle as Toruk Makto to lead the defense of Pandora, but Jake somberly refuses, stating, "When you ride the beast, you become the beast."

The Ambush of the Mangkwan

Tensions rise as General Frances Ardmore grows impatient with Recom Quaritch, who remains obsessed with vengeance against Jake Sully. Amidst the debris of the SeaDragon, Lo'ak and Tsireya discover the shattered remains of Eytukan’s bow. Though they briefly consider repairing the heirloom, Lo'ak deems it too far gone and buries it in the sand, a symbol of the family's fractured heritage. Jake offers Neytiri modified arrows tipped with M83 rocket components, but she rejects them, clinging to traditional ways even as the world changes around her.

The arrival of the Tlalim Clan, known as the "Wind Traders," brings a difficult decision. Fearing for Spider’s safety as a human in a war zone, Jake and Neytiri suggest he travel with the traders back to High Camp to live with the Resistance. Despite the fierce protests of Kiri and Lo'ak, a compromise is reached: the Sullys will escort Spider part of the way. However, the journey turns into a nightmare when the convoy is ambushed by the Mangkwan—the Ash People. Led by the ruthless Olo'eyktan Varang, the Ash People utilize fire bombs and kamikaze tactics, brutally slaughtering the Wind Traders. During the chaos, Neytiri is severely injured by Varang and falls into the forest, while Lo'ak is forced to use a machine gun to defend his siblings, directly disobeying his father’s orders.

The Miracle of the Woodsprite

Separated and hunted, the children flee through the dense jungle. Spider’s situation becomes dire when his exopack runs out of oxygen, leading to rapid asphyxiation. In a moment of desperation and pure intuition, Kiri connects her queue to the Pandoran soil. She places a woodsprite into Spider’s mouth and forces it down his throat. Within moments, Eywa’s vines envelop the boy. When the cocoon recedes, Spider emerges changed—he can now breathe Pandora’s air without a mask. He has developed a mycelium organism within his body and, eventually, begins to grow his own neural queue.

Jake, cornered by Quaritch and Wainfleet, is forced into a temporary and uneasy alliance to rescue the children from the Ash People. Quaritch, intrigued by the Mangkwan’s ferocity, demonstrates the power of human firearms to Varang. However, Varang is no simple savage; she momentarily incapacitates Quaritch through a surprise neural connection. Kiri eventually saves the group by commanding local flora to fire toxic projectile thorns at their captors, allowing them to escape. During a brief moment of respite, Jake attempts to show Quaritch the beauty of Pandora, though the Colonel remains hardened by his mission.

Secrets of the Soul and the Shadow of War

Upon returning to High Camp, Neytiri is treated by Mo'at and Resistance scientists. Here, Kiri learns the truth of her origin: she is not Grace Augustine’s daughter in the traditional sense, but a biological clone of Grace’s avatar, born without a father. Meanwhile, the RDA discovers Spider’s new ability to breathe Pandoran air. Parker Selfridge and RDA scientists realize the mycelium in Spider could be reverse-engineered to allow all humans to colonize Pandora without exopacks—a discovery that turns Spider into the ultimate tactical asset. Neytiri, viewing Spider as a liability that could lead to the extinction of the Na'vi, suggests he be eliminated, a cold sentiment that Jake initially resists.

As the family returns to Awa'atlu, Lo'ak’s internal turmoil reaches a breaking point. After a heated argument where Jake blames him for Neteyam's death, Lo'ak wanders into isolation, nearly taking his own life with a rifle. He is saved by Kiri and Tsireya, who provide the emotional support he desperately needs. Far away, Quaritch cements a dark pact with the Mangkwan. He provides them with automatic weapons and flamethrowers, promising them dominance over all other clans. To seal the alliance, Quaritch and Varang enter into a romantic and strategic relationship, uniting RDA technology with Mangkwan brutality.

The Capture at Awa'atlu

While Kiri and Spider share their first kiss in the forest, their peace is shattered by the arrival of Quaritch, Wainfleet, and the Mangkwan army. Spider is captured after luring the enemies away to let Kiri escape. The RDA and the Ash People descend upon Awa'atlu, setting the village ablaze. To prevent a total massacre of the Metkayina, Jake surrenders himself. He and Spider are taken to Bridgehead City, where they are scheduled for execution by firing squad as traitors to the human race.

Simultaneously, the RDA prepares for the "Calf Communion," an annual mating event for the Tulkun, intending to harvest amrita on a massive scale. Ian Garvin, a biologist increasingly disillusioned by the RDA’s cruelty, decides to act. In a daring move, he steals a bulldozer and smashes Jake’s glass cage. At the same time, Neytiri infiltrates the base disguised as a Mangkwan warrior. She uses explosive arrows to cause mass distractions and nearly kills Varang. Spider escapes his cell using his father’s dog tags to unscrew a panel, using himself as a human shield to ensure Jake’s safe passage out of the facility, knowing the RDA cannot risk killing their "breathing" specimen.

The Choice of the Olo'eyktan

Safe for a moment by a forest stream, Jake is haunted by Neytiri’s earlier warning. He takes Spider to a secluded area, sorrowfully contemplating killing him to prevent the RDA from ever perfecting the breathing organism. However, looking at the boy he has raised, Jake cannot pull the trigger and instead embraces him. Neytiri, having seen the darkness within herself reflected in Varang, arrives and stops Jake. In a powerful moment of reconciliation, she tells Spider, "I See You," finally accepting him as a true member of the Sully family.

Recognizing that the Sky People will never stop, Jake finally re-bonds with the Great Leonopteryx, becoming Toruk Makto once more. He rallies the clans for an all-out war. Though the Tulkun council initially refuses to fight due to their pacifist ways, Lo'ak introduces them to Ta'nok—the blinded survivor of a human attack. Seeing the scars of their kin, the Tulkun, led by Payakan and Ta'nok, finally agree to join the battle to protect their home.

The Battle at the Cove of the Ancestors

The final conflict erupts at the Cove of the Ancestors. A massive RDA fleet is met by the combined force of the Na'vi and the Tulkun. The battle is devastating; the Mangkwan on ikran rain fire down upon the Metkayina. Rotxo is killed in the skirmish, and Ronal is mortally wounded while giving birth to her daughter, Pril. With her final breath, Ronal entrusts the infant to Neytiri. Jake is struck by an arrow in the leg but continues to lead the charge.

Kiri and Spider swim to the underwater Spirit Tree, pooling their strength to unlock Eywa’s full power. They take control of Pandoran wildlife on a massive scale, summoning Southern Squidrays to decimate the RDA submarines. Kiri eventually confronts Varang on the burning Factory Ship. Instead of killing her, Kiri connects her queue to Varang, overwhelming the Mangkwan leader with the sheer force of Eywa’s will and forcing her to flee in terror. The Factory Ship, its engines disabled by a C-21 Dragon flung by Jake’s Leonopteryx, drifts into the "Flux Devil"—a violent magnetic vortex that rips the vessel and General Ardmore apart.

The Spirit of the People

In the ruins of the battle, Jake, Quaritch, and Spider find themselves isolated on floating rocks amidst an inferno. Spider shoots Quaritch in the arm with a crossbow to save Jake, but falls toward the flames. In a final act of paternal instinct, Quaritch catches him, and Jake pulls them both to safety. When Neytiri arrives with her bow drawn, Quaritch chooses a warrior’s exit; rather than being executed, he leaps from the rock into the fire below, his ultimate fate left uncertain.

The film concludes with a ceremony of life and memory. Tsireya and Aonung watch as their father connects their new sister, Pril, to the Spirit Tree. Spider, now a true Na'vi in spirit and body, connects to the tree as well. In the Spirit World, he is greeted by the memories of Neteyam, Tsu'tey, Grace, and the others who fell. Kiri whispers to him that his spirit will live in Eywa forever. As Spider is formally initiated into the People, the camera pulls back from Awa'atlu, revealing the glowing, interconnected neural network of the Oma stretching across the entire moon of Pandora.
