Nearly three decades after the initial Rage virus outbreak, the British Isles remain under strict quarantine while the rest of the world has moved on. On the tidal island of Lindisfarne, a small community has rebuilt a semblance of society, but when a young boy named Spike and his stepfather journey to the mainland, they discover that the infected have evolved and that the true horror lies not just in the monsters, but in the twisted mythology the survivors have created to cope with the past.

The Plot
The Sacrifice in the Highlands
As the initial wave of the Rage Virus tore through the Scottish Highlands, a young boy named Jimmy Crystal fled his home in terror as his own family turned into bloodthirsty monsters. Seeking refuge in a local church, he found his father, the minister, caught in a state of religious ecstasy. Interpreting the viral apocalypse as the literal Day of Judgment, the minister saw the infection as a divine harbinger. Before the screaming Infected could break through the doors, the father bequeathed a crucifix necklace to his son and pushed him to safety, staying behind to sacrifice himself to the horde in an act of misguided faith.
The Fortress of Lindisfarne
Twenty-eight years after the initial outbreak, the world has been forever altered. While continental Europe has managed to eradicate the virus, the British Isles remain under a brutal, indefinite quarantine. A small, civilized community of survivors has taken root on the holy island of Lindisfarne, protected from the mainland by a tidal causeway that floods daily, creating a natural barrier against the Infected. Among these survivors are Jamie, a rugged scavenger; his wife Isla, who suffers from a mysterious, debilitating mental illness characterized by memory loss and frequent nosebleeds; and their twelve-year-old son, Spike.
A Rite of Passage and the Alpha's Shadow
To mark Spike’s transition into manhood, Jamie takes him across the causeway to the mainland for a traditional hunting ritual. The mainland is a desolate graveyard, but the pair soon discovers something terrifying: an Infected individual tied up and branded with the name "Jimmy." Their hunt takes a turn for the worse when they encounter a large pack led by an "Alpha"—a new, evolved strain of the virus that has rendered the host stronger, more durable, and far more intelligent than the common "runners."
Forced to take shelter in the attic of a decaying cottage, Spike watches the horizon, noticing foreign NATO quarantine patrol boats and a distant, mysterious bonfire further inland. When the floorboards collapse, the Alpha and its pack swarm them, leading to a desperate, high-stakes chase across the partially submerged causeway. They narrowly reach the safety of the village after the island's sentries dispatch the pursuing Alpha using a heavy ballista.
Betrayal and a Secret Hope
The village celebrates Spike’s first kill, but the boy finds no joy in the festivities. He is increasingly disillusioned by his father’s reckless behavior and the way Jamie embellishes the story of their survival. The tension peaks when Spike discovers Jamie’s secret affair with Rosie, the village schoolteacher. Frustrated by his father’s infidelity and his refusal to find medical help for Isla, Spike consults a family friend named Sam. He learns of Dr. Ian Kelson, a former general practitioner living in exile on the mainland, whom the villagers fear and avoid due to his ritualistic obsession with burning bodies.
Driven by the hope that Kelson can cure his mother, Spike orchestrates a daring distraction by setting fire to a village barn. Under the cover of the chaos, he sneaks Isla across the causeway to the mainland, determined to find the mysterious doctor at any cost.
The Miracle and the Swede
The journey across the mainland is fraught with peril. While resting in a ruined church, Spike falls asleep, only to be saved when Isla enters a dissociative state and kills an attacking Infected. They are eventually found by Erik Sundqvist, the sole survivor of a shipwrecked Swedish Naval/NATO patrol. Erik joins their expedition, but the group soon encounters a biological anomaly: a pregnant Infected woman. Against all odds, Isla helps the woman deliver a perfectly healthy, uninfected baby girl.
The miracle is short-lived as Erik, consumed by paranoia and the fear of the virus spreading, kills the mother and prepares to execute Spike and Isla to "sterilize" the situation. However, the Alpha father of the newborn—the same intelligent creature that had pursued Jamie earlier—suddenly appears and brutally decapitates Erik. Before the Alpha can slaughter the others, it is suddenly incapacitated by a morphine-laced blowdart fired from the shadows by Dr. Ian Kelson.
The Architect of Memento Mori
Kelson leads the survivors and the newborn to his refuge: a vast, macabre temple constructed entirely from the sterilized bones of the dead. He explains his philosophy of "Memento Mori"—remembering one's mortality—and reveals that he views himself as an undertaker for a fallen world, despite the villagers' fear of him. He even incorporates Erik’s skull into the monument as a final tribute. Upon examining Isla, Kelson delivers a crushing diagnosis: she does not have the virus, but rather terminal cancer that has metastasized to her breasts and brain. There is no cure.
A Mother’s Final Choice
Facing a slow and painful death, Isla chooses to go out on her own terms. After a tearful and heart-wrenching goodbye with Spike, Kelson peacefully euthanizes her with morphine at her request. In keeping with the traditions of his sanctuary, Kelson sterilizes Isla’s skull and gives it to Spike. The boy climbs to the very summit of the bone monument, placing his mother’s remains at the highest point as a final act of love and remembrance.
The Heart of the Mainland
The sanctuary is soon breached by the reawakened Alpha, whom Kelson has named "Samson." Spike manages to fight the creature off, saving the doctor’s life. Kelson urges Spike to take the newborn—whom Spike names Isla after his mother—and return to the safety of Lindisfarne, teaching him the phrase "Memento Amoris" (Remember Love). Spike leaves the infant at the village gate with a note for Jamie, revealing the baby's name and promising that he will return only when he is ready. Jamie discovers the child and the note, but the rising tide prevents him from following his son back into the wilderness.
Twenty-eight days later, Spike is shown deep in the heart of the mainland, pursued by a pack of Infected. Just as he is about to be overwhelmed, he is rescued by a mysterious cult of survivors who dress in tracksuits. They lead him to their leader: the grown-up Jimmy from the original Highlands outbreak. Jimmy, now a man shaped by decades of survival and religious fervor, greets Spike while wearing his father’s cross necklace, now significantly inverted.
