The Plot

Spoiler Alert: The following section contains a complete plot summary for The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018), including the ending and major plot twists.

The Midnight Visitors

In a secluded trailer park in Kalida, Ohio, the silence of the night is broken by the arrival of a pickup truck carrying three masked figures: Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, and the Man in the Mask. They park in front of a random trailer, their presence announced by the jarring sound of 1980s pop music blaring from their vehicle. Dollface approaches the door and bangs on it relentlessly, waking the sleeping occupants. When the wife goes to investigate the noise, she spots the truck outside before turning to find the silhouette of Dollface standing in the darkened corner of her living room. Dollface swiftly kills the woman off-screen. In a chilling display of calmness, the masked killer then walks into the bedroom and lies down in bed next to the woman's unsuspecting, sleeping husband.

A Family in Crisis

The following day, Mike and Cindy embark on a family road trip with their two teenage children, 18-year-old Luke and his rebellious 16-year-old sister, Kinsey. The trip is intended to be a bonding experience at their aunt and uncle's trailer park in Gatlin Lake before Kinsey is sent away to boarding school. Tensions are high as they drive, and Cindy calls ahead to leave a voicemail for Uncle Marvin, informing him that they are running late. Upon arriving at the largely deserted grounds at night, the family collects the keys to their trailer and attempts to settle in. The atmosphere is strained as they sit down to play cards, but Kinsey, refusing to participate, storms out into the night. Mike and Cindy urge Luke to follow his sister and try to reconcile with her.

"Is Tamara Home?"

While the children are outside, a knock sounds at the trailer door. Cindy answers to find a young woman standing in the shadows, her face obscured by the darkness, though she is unmasked. The stranger asks, "Is Tamara home?" Cindy informs her that she has the wrong trailer, and the woman drifts away into the night. Meanwhile, Kinsey and Luke wander through the desolate park. They stumble upon a trailer with its door standing wide open. curious and concerned, they step inside only to discover a gruesome scene: their Aunt Sheryl and Uncle Marvin have been brutally murdered and mutilated.

Trapped in the Bathroom

Back at the family trailer, the stranger returns, knocking again to ask for Tamara. Mike turns her away, watching uneasily as she disappears into the woods. Moments later, the terrified children rush back, hysterics gripping them as they try to explain what they saw. Mike instructs Cindy and Kinsey to stay inside the trailer while he takes Luke to verify the grim discovery. As soon as the men leave, Cindy and Kinsey realize they are under siege; their cell phones have been smashed and destroyed. Dollface, now wearing her mask, reveals herself inside the trailer, brandishing a large kitchen knife. Cindy and Kinsey retreat to the bathroom, locking themselves in. Desperate to save her daughter, Cindy helps Kinsey climb out through the skylight. Before Cindy can follow, Dollface smashes through the door and stabs Cindy to death while a horrified Kinsey watches from the roof before fleeing.

The Crash and the Ice Pick

Mike and Luke confirm the deaths of Marvin and Sheryl. In the uncle's trailer, they find the voicemail Cindy left earlier playing on the answering machine, realizing with horror that the killers had listened to the message and were lying in wait for the family to arrive. They are suddenly stalked by the Man in the Mask but manage to retrieve a revolver from the bedroom. Returning to their trailer, they find Kinsey missing and Cindy's lifeless body. Overcome with shock but driven by the need to save Kinsey, they jump into their minivan and drive frantically around the grounds, screaming her name.

As they speed through the park, one of the killers hurls a cinder block at the minivan, shattering the windshield. Blinded, Mike swerves and crashes violently into an empty trailer. Mike regains consciousness to find himself pinned to the seat, a large wooden plank from the porch impaled through his abdomen. Knowing his time is short, he hands the revolver to Luke and orders him to find his sister. Reluctantly, Luke leaves. Moments later, the Man in the Mask enters the wrecked van, turns on the radio to a haunting pop song, and calmly murders Mike with an ice pick.

Blood in the Water

Kinsey, isolated and terrified, is hunted by Dollface and Pin-Up Girl. She sustains a stab wound to the leg but is rescued just in time by Luke. The siblings flee together, but Luke decides to hide Kinsey under a porch while he makes a run for the general store to use the landline. He manages to dial 911, but the line goes dead—Pin-Up Girl is inside with him. Luke sprints out to the community swimming pool, where Pin-Up Girl ambushes him. In a fierce struggle, Luke overpowers the killer and stabs her to death with her own knife. Breathing heavily, he taunts the emerging Man in the Mask, shouting, "You just killed one of your own!"

The Man in the Mask, enraged, attacks Luke with a fire axe. The two fight viciously, tumbling into the pool. The killer gains the upper hand, stabbing Luke in the back and leaving him to drown in the water. Kinsey arrives moments later, dragging her brother's unconscious body from the pool. She saves his life but is forced to leave him hidden to go find help.

"Why Not?"

Kinsey reaches the main road just as a sheriff's deputy pulls up. She frantically screams for help, but as the deputy exits his vehicle, he is instantly killed—his throat slit by Dollface. Kinsey manages to scramble into the police SUV, but she struggles with the ignition. Dollface appears at the window, teasingly dangling the keys. Thinking quickly, Kinsey grabs the deputy's shotgun and blasts through the window, hitting Dollface in the chest. Kinsey steps out and looms over the wounded killer. She unmasks the woman and demands to know, "Why are you doing this?" Coughing up blood, Dollface simply replies, "Why not?" Kinsey finishes her off with a shotgun blast to the head.

A Fiery Pursuit

The Man in the Mask arrives in his truck and rams the police SUV, disabling it. As he prepares to finish Kinsey off, she spots a gasoline leak pooling beneath both vehicles. Using her lighter, she ignites the fuel. A massive explosion engulfs both trucks. Miraculously, the Man in the Mask survives, stepping out of the inferno with his truck and body engulfed in flames. He continues to pursue Kinsey, driving his burning truck until he crashes. He emerges from the wreckage, horribly burned, and attempts to attack her with his axe. He collapses, seemingly succumbing to his injuries after pulling a shard of glass from his abdomen.

The Last Stand on the Road

Kinsey flags down a passing pickup truck driven by a mother and her son. As she climbs into the truck bed, the family sees the Man in the Mask rising again, charred but relentless. Panicked, they attempt to drive away. The killer leaps onto the back of the truck, swinging his axe at Kinsey. In a final act of survival, Kinsey grabs a baseball bat from the truck bed and swings it with all her might at the killer's head. The impact is devastating, knocking his eye out of its socket and snapping his neck. He falls from the moving vehicle onto the road, finally lifeless.

A Lingering Terror

Some time later, Luke is recovering in a hospital bed. Kinsey is by his side but awakens abruptly from a nightmare. She gets up to fill a cup of water from the sink. As the room falls silent, the ominous sound of a jack-in-the-box—a toy Dollface used earlier to taunt her—begins to play. A familiar, rhythmic banging echoes on the hospital room door. Frozen in terror, Kinsey drops her cup, the sound of shattering glass marking the end of the story.
