The Plot
Day 89: Silence and the Bridge
By Day 89 of a global invasion, most of Earth's human population has been decimated by sightless extraterrestrial creatures. These entities, possessed of impenetrable armored shells, extreme speed, and hypersensitive hearing, hunt exclusively by sound. In a deserted town, the Abbott family—Lee, Evelyn, their deaf daughter Regan, and sons Marcus and Beau—scavenge for supplies in a pharmacy, communicating strictly through American Sign Language (ASL). Young Beau is drawn to a battery-operated toy space shuttle, but Lee, terrified of the potential noise, carefully removes the batteries and places the toy out of reach. However, in a gesture of kindness, Regan secretly hands the shuttle back to Beau, unaware that he has also retrieved the batteries.
The family begins the trek back to their farmhouse, walking barefoot on trails of sand laid out to muffle their footsteps. As they cross a steel bridge, four-year-old Beau trails behind and activates the toy shuttle. The sudden electronic sirens pierce the silence of the woods. Lee drops his gear and sprints desperately toward his son, but he is too far away. Before he can reach the boy, a creature bursts from the treeline with terrifying speed and kills Beau, leaving the family shattered by grief and guilt.
Day 472: Life on the Farm
More than a year later, the Abbotts have adapted their lives to absolute silence on their isolated farm. Lee has installed an elaborate surveillance system to monitor the property and spends his nights trying to contact other survivors via Morse code, though he receives no response. He meticulously maintains notes on the creatures, documenting their blindness, armor, and attraction to sound. Evelyn is now heavily pregnant, and the family prepares for the baby's arrival by soundproofing the basement barn with layers of newspaper and preparing a wooden crate with an oxygen mask to muffle the infant's cries.
Tension lingers within the family. Regan blames herself for Beau's death and feels alienated from her father, believing he blames her as well. Lee attempts to repair a scavenged cochlear implant for her using miniature amplifiers, but when he presents it to her, she rejects it, insisting the devices never work. Later that evening, the family gathers for dinner, holding hands in silent prayer. Afterwards, while playing a game of Monopoly, Marcus accidentally knocks over a lantern. The glass shatters and the oil ignites, creating a small fire. Lee extinguishes it quickly, but the noise draws a threat. They wait in agonizing silence as something crawls on the roof, but relief washes over them when it turns out to be only raccoons. To comfort his wife, Lee shares a pair of earbuds with Evelyn, and they sway gently to Neil Young's "Harvest Moon."
Day 473: The Lesson and the Nail
On October 3, 2021, Evelyn checks her blood pressure; she is due to give birth on the 20th. While she homeschools Marcus, Lee prepares to take his son to the river to check the fishing traps. Regan asks to go, but Lee insists she stay behind to help her mother, further fueling her belief that he doesn't want her around. Before leaving, Lee encourages Marcus, explaining that the loud, constant churning of the waterfall masks their voices, allowing them to speak freely. There, Marcus asks if Lee blames Regan for Beau's death. Lee denies it, but Marcus urges his father to explicitly tell Regan he loves her, as she carries the weight of the tragedy. Meanwhile, Regan packs a bag, including the failed cochlear implant and a new toy shuttle she has modified to be silent, and heads to the bridge to visit Beau’s memorial.
Back at the farmhouse, Evelyn carries a heavy laundry bag up the basement stairs. The bag snags on a loose piece of wood, and as she pulls it free, she unknowingly pulls a large, sharp nail upwards, leaving it exposed on the step. Later, while Lee and Marcus are returning home through the woods, they encounter an elderly man standing over the body of his wife, who has been killed by a creature. Lee pleads silently for the man to remain quiet, but the grieving survivor lets out a devastating scream. Lee grabs Marcus and hides behind a tree just as a creature arrives and kills the old man.
The Invasion Begins
Alone at the house, Evelyn goes into labor early. As her water breaks, she heads to the basement but steps directly onto the exposed nail on the stairs. She stifles a scream of agony, but in doing so, drops a glass picture frame which shatters loudly. The noise instantly attracts a creature into the house. Despite her contractions, Evelyn manages to flip a switch that turns the exterior farmhouse lights from white to red—a distress signal—before slowly making her way back upstairs to hide in a bathtub.
Lee and Marcus see the red warning lights from the distance and rush toward the farm. Lee instructs Marcus to run to the edge of the cornfield and set off a cache of fireworks they had prepared as a diversion. Inside the house, the creature stalks the bathroom where Evelyn is hiding. As the contractions intensify, she prepares to scream, but at that exact moment, the fireworks explode outside. The loud booms draw the creature away, allowing Evelyn to finally let out her scream of pain safely.
The Silo and the Frequency
Lee enters the house with a shotgun and finds Evelyn in the bathroom, having just given birth to a baby boy. They move to the soundproofed basement, placing the infant in the coffin-like box with an oxygen mask. Lee leaves to find the other children, promising Evelyn he will protect them. Meanwhile, Regan, seeing the fireworks, runs back toward the farm and reunites with Marcus atop a grain silo. They try to light a signal fire, but the lighter fluid runs out. Suddenly, the hatch door gives way, and Marcus falls into the silo, sinking into the corn like quicksand. Regan jumps in to save him, but a creature, having lost interest in the fireworks, attacks them in the silo. As the creature lunges, Regan's cochlear implant emits a piercing high-frequency feedback. The sound causes the creature visible distress, and it flees, smashing through the silo wall.
A Father's Sacrifice
Regan and Marcus escape the silo and reunite with Lee. As they run toward the truck, the creature returns, slashing Lee across the chest and knocking him down. The children hide inside a pickup truck, but the sound of the door slamming attracts the monster. It begins to tear at the vehicle's roof. Seeing his children in imminent danger and realizing he is too wounded to fight, Lee makes eye contact with Regan. He signs "I love you. I have always loved you," before standing up and screaming at the top of his lungs. The creature abandons the truck and charges Lee, killing him instantly. This sacrifice gives Regan and Marcus the chance to release the parking brake and roll the truck down the hill back to the house.
The Final Stand
The children reunite with Evelyn and retreat to the basement. A creature follows them down, stalking the room. Regan spots her father’s notes on the workbench, specifically regarding his experiments with hearing aids and the creatures' physiology. She realizes the high-frequency feedback from her implant is a weapon. As the creature prepares to strike, Regan turns her implant on and presses it against a microphone connected to a sound amplifier. The agonizing feedback blasts through the speakers, causing the creature to thrash in pain and disorientation. Its armored headplates flare open, exposing the vulnerable flesh beneath.
Seizing the moment, Evelyn aims her shotgun at the exposed flesh and fires, blowing the creature's head apart. The silence returns, but only for a moment. The gunshot echoes across the valley, and on the surveillance monitors, the family sees two more creatures sprinting toward the house. Regan, now armed with the knowledge of their weakness, turns the gain on the amplifier to the maximum. Evelyn looks at the screen, then at her daughter, and cocks the shotgun with a determined look, ready to take back their world.
