The Plot
The Heist at Gotham National
Taking place roughly ten months after the emergence of the Batman, the story opens with a calculated heist at the mob-owned Gotham National Bank. The psychopathic Joker, disguised under a 'Bozo' clown mask, leads a team of five henchmen—Grumpy, Chuckles, Happy, Dopey, and a bus driver—all donning similar masks. As the robbery progresses, the criminals systematically double-cross and execute one another, each believing they are increasing their share of the loot, unaware that these orders came from the mastermind himself.
Eventually, the only survivor is the Joker. He reveals his scarred face to the terrified bank manager, shoving a smoke grenade into the man's mouth before detonating it. With the money secured, the Joker drives a school bus out of the bank's wreckage, seamlessly blending into a line of identical buses passing by just as the police arrive to survey the chaotic scene.
Imposters and A New Armor
That night, a drug deal involving the Chechen’s gangsters and the Scarecrow is interrupted by multiple Batman impersonators wielding firearms. The real Batman arrives, subduing both the criminals and the imposters, though the Chechen manages to escape. During the melee, Batman sustains significant injuries, including brutal bites from Rottweiler dogs that penetrate the weak spots of his armor. This vulnerability prompts Bruce Wayne to request a new suit from Lucius Fox—one that trades protection for greater versatility and speed.
Meanwhile, the new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, is making waves as the "White Knight of Gotham City," successfully prosecuting criminals and even surviving an assassination attempt by mob boss Salvatore Maroni in open court. Bruce Wayne and Lieutenant James Gordon contemplate bringing Dent into their fold, hoping he can be the legitimate hero Batman cannot be. However, a complication arises in Bruce’s personal life: he and Dent are competing for the affection of Rachel Dawes, who is currently in a relationship with the charismatic District Attorney.
A Magic Trick
Feeling the pressure from Dent’s legal crusade and Batman’s physical assaults, the mob bosses—including Maroni, the Chechen, and Gambol—hold a clandestine video conference with their Chinese accountant, Lau. Lau informs them that he has preemptively moved their funds to Hong Kong to avoid seizure. The meeting is interrupted by the Joker, who offers a simple solution: kill the Batman for half of the mob's money.
To demonstrate his ruthlessness, the Joker performs a "magic trick," slamming a crony’s head onto a pencil standing upright on the table, instantly killing him. He warns the bosses that Lau will eventually betray them if caught. Gambol, insulted by the Joker's demeanor, places a bounty on the clown's head. The Joker leaves, dropping a playing card as his contact information, while the mob bosses initially refuse his offer.
Hostile Takeover and Extraction
Bruce receives his upgraded suit from Lucius Fox. The new design features a cowl that allows him to turn his head, separated plates for maneuverability, and gauntlets capable of firing defensive spikes. While Bruce prepares, the Joker enacts a plan to take over Gambol’s operation. His men deliver the Joker’s "corpse" to Gambol’s headquarters in garbage bags, claiming the bounty. The ruse works perfectly; the Joker springs to life, holding a knife to Gambol's mouth before killing him and forcing his men to fight to the death for a spot in his crew.
Intent on retrieving the mob's money and Lau, Bruce and Fox travel to Hong Kong. Fox plants a sonar device that maps the surroundings via cell phone signals. That night, Batman uses a "Skyhook" extraction method to infiltrate the high-security skyscraper, neutralize the guards, and capture Lau, delivering him back to Gotham police.
An Ultimatum for Gotham
In custody, Lau agrees to testify against the mob in exchange for protection, leading to a massive sweep where nearly all the crime bosses are arrested. Desperate, Maroni and the Chechen turn to the Joker, agreeing to his terms. The Joker immediately broadcasts a chilling ultimatum: if Batman does not reveal his identity, people will die each day. He starts by murdering a Batman impersonator, Brian Douglas, and leaves clues at the scene predicting his next targets: Commissioner Loeb, Judge Surillo, and Harvey Dent.
Despite Gordon's frantic efforts to protect the targets, the Joker strikes. Judge Surillo is killed when her car explodes upon reading an envelope containing the single word "UP." Commissioner Loeb dies in his office after drinking poisoned whiskey, the DNA evidence suggesting the Joker had access to his personal items. The threat escalates as the Joker targets Dent next.
Crashing the Party
Bruce Wayne throws a fundraiser for Harvey Dent, where Dent attempts to propose to Rachel. Before she can answer, the Joker and his thugs invade the party, hunting for the District Attorney. Bruce manages to hide Dent in a panic room before facing the intruders as himself, then disappearing to suit up. When the Joker threatens Rachel, playing on her connection to Dent, she fights back. Batman arrives, engaging the henchmen. The confrontation ends when the Joker drops Rachel out of a window; Batman dives after her, breaking her fall and saving her life, while the Joker escapes into the night.
Assassination at the Memorial
The next day, a public memorial is held for Commissioner Loeb. The Joker ruthlessly binds and gags the Honor Guard members in an apartment overlooking the ceremony, stealing their uniforms. Disguised as police officers, the Joker and his men open fire during the 21-gun salute, aiming for Mayor Garcia. Lieutenant Gordon dives in front of the Mayor, taking a bullet to the back and apparently dying in the chaos.
In the ensuing riot, the police wound and capture Thomas Schiff, a paranoid schizophrenic wearing a uniform with the nametag "OFFICER RACHEL DAWES." Dent, enraged and desperate, hijacks the ambulance holding Schiff. Elsewhere, Batman interrogates Maroni on a fire escape, dropping him from a height that shatters his legs but fails to yield the Joker’s location.
Crossing the Line
Dent takes Schiff to a secluded location, threatening to kill him with a revolver and his lucky coin—heads he lives, tails he dies. Batman intervenes, stopping Dent from crossing the line into murder, and reveals that he plans to turn himself in to stop the slaughter. The next day, Dent holds a press conference. Just as Bruce prepares to step forward, Dent shocks the city by announcing that he is the Batman. He is taken into custody, a sacrificial move to lure the Joker out of hiding. Rachel, watching the events, gives Alfred a letter for Bruce, stating she intends to marry Harvey.
The Chase
Dent is transported in an armored SWAT van, which is soon ambushed by the Joker. Driving a semi-truck with "SLAUGHTER" spray-painted on the side, the Joker attacks the convoy with heavy weaponry. Batman intervenes in the Tumbler, taking a rocket meant for the van, which forces him to eject in the Batpod—a motorcycle formed from the Tumbler's front wheels.
Batman uses the Batpod's cables to flip the Joker's semi-truck upside down in the middle of the street. The Joker crawls from the wreckage, standing in the road and screaming "HIT ME!" as Batman charges at him. Refusing to break his one rule, Batman crashes the Batpod to avoid killing the villain. As the Joker prepares to unmask the stunned hero, Gordon—who faked his death to protect his family—appears from the SWAT van and arrests the Joker.
The Killing Joke
With the Joker incarcerated, Gordon is promoted to Commissioner. However, the victory is short-lived; Dent never made it home. Batman interrogates the Joker, barring the door and beating him brutally. The Joker reveals that Dent and Rachel have been kidnapped and placed in two separate locations rigged with explosives. He presents a sadistic choice: Batman can only save one.
Batman speeds off to save Rachel, while Gordon heads for Dent. The Joker, however, switched the addresses. Batman arrives to find Dent, not Rachel. Simultaneously, Rachel and Dent speak over an intercom as the timers tick down. Rachel accepts Dent’s proposal just as the bombs detonate. Rachel is killed instantly. Dent, soaked in oil from a fall during his struggle, is saved by Batman but the explosion sets the left side of his face on fire, leaving him horribly disfigured. In the chaos at the police station, the Joker uses a phone-bomb sewn into a thug's stomach to blow up the MCU and escape with Lau.
The Birth of Two-Face
A grief-stricken Bruce Wayne is consoled by Alfred, who secretly burns Rachel's letter to spare Bruce the pain of knowing she chose Harvey. At Gotham General Hospital, Dent wakes up to the reality of his loss and his disfigurement, refusing medication or skin grafts. He blames Batman and Gordon for Rachel's death.
The Joker, dressed as a nurse, visits Dent. He manipulates the broken man, claiming he is merely an agent of chaos and that the "schemers" (Gordon, the mob, the police) are the real problem. He hands Dent a gun, inviting him to execute him. Dent flips his coin—now charred black on one side—and spares the Joker. The Joker then blows up the hospital, escaping on a bus full of hostages, while Dent embarks on a vigilante rampage as "Two-Face," seeking vengeance on those he holds responsible.
Social Experiment
The Joker takes control of the city, killing the Chechen and burning his mountain of money along with Lau (who is atop the pile). He threatens that anyone remaining in Gotham by nightfall will be subject to his rule, and that he has wired the bridges and tunnels to explode. This causes a mass evacuation, forcing people onto two large ferries: one carrying civilians, the other carrying prisoners.
The Joker cuts the power to both boats and announces a social experiment: each boat has the detonator to the other. If one boat blows the other up by midnight, they live. If neither does, he blows up both. Meanwhile, Batman uses a morally questionable sonar surveillance system, created by a reluctant Lucius Fox, to locate the Joker at the Prewitt Building.
Clowns and Hostages
Two-Face captures Gordon's family, forcing Gordon to meet him at the site of Rachel's death. At the Prewitt Building, Batman discovers the Joker’s devious trap: the clown-masked gunmen are actually the hostages, gagged and taped, while the "hostages" are the Joker's mercenaries. Batman is forced to fight the SWAT team to prevent them from killing the innocent captives, while simultaneously taking out the Joker's men.
An Ace in the Hole
Batman confronts the Joker, fighting off Rottweilers and enduring a beating with a steel pipe. The Joker pins Batman, waiting for the ferries to explode at midnight. However, the time passes, and neither the convicts nor the civilians can bring themselves to kill the others. The Joker is confused, his philosophy of human ugliness disproven.
Batman uses his gauntlet spikes to disarm the Joker and throws him off the building. Staying true to his code, Batman catches him with a grapple line, leaving him dangling upside down. The Joker cackles, revealing that while he lost the battle for Gotham's soul, he has an "Ace in the hole": Harvey Dent. He has corrupted the White Knight, knowing that Dent's fall will destroy all hope in Gotham.
The Dark Knight
Batman races to the building where Rachel died, finding Two-Face holding Gordon and his family at gunpoint. Two-Face claims the only true justice is chance—the flip of a coin. He flips for Batman (heads, bad side), shooting him in the abdomen. He flips for himself (heads, good side), sparing his own life. Finally, he flips for Gordon's son.
Before the coin lands, Batman tackles Two-Face off the ledge. Batman pulls Gordon's son to safety, but Dent falls to his death. The coin lands on the good side, implying the boy would have lived. Gordon laments that the Joker has won; if the city learns their White Knight was a murderer, hope will die. Batman makes the ultimate sacrifice: he tells Gordon to blame the murders on him. They must protect Dent's reputation to preserve the good he did.
A manhunt is issued for the Batman. Alfred burns Rachel's note, and Lucius Fox smiles as the sonar machine self-destructs. As Gordon smashes the Bat-Signal, his son asks why they are hunting the hero who saved them. Gordon explains that Batman is the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. He is a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A Dark Knight.
